Maybe the best location in town! Very close to the train station, restaurants, bars and shopping. Beautiful traditional hotel with comfortable beds, nice baths, an exercise center and pool, amazing river views, and openable windows! Very quiet, even with the window open. A school is across the river and the distant sounds of birds and laughing children greeted us the first morning. No air conditioning in the rooms, but a fan in front of the window kept the interior temperature cool enough and provided fresh air. The Tannery bar at the hotel provided great food and drinks on the beautiful riverside deck.
Our first holiday in the Lake District was unfortunately ruined! Due to the facilities in the hotel, not being available to us. As a former house keeper of over 15 years of experience, I'm not convinced that these rooms get cleaned to the highest standards. This is due to the fact that my room had cobwebs in the corners, I found a used hair bobble on the floor, a used tissue in the blanket which was from the wardrobe, the light shade had clumps of dust on it, lastly, the tap for the bath had grime all in it!nnThe town itself, was totally child unfriendly when it came to eating in the evening. Eventually, paying London prices for a Lasagne and Pasta, which was cold within minutes. Unless you want to eat in a café, then you are hard pushed to find anything different. We were only there for 48 hours and we had spent £700 including the hotel with nothing to show for it. The town is just full of cafés and pubs, there's not many restaurants. There's not even a souvenir shop!nnOn the morning of departure, we thought we'd be able to stay in the bistro with a coffee that was closed, however, we couldn't even use the luggage facility, due to the staff having a Christmas party that afternoon, no facilities were available, as they were closing that afternoon. So we felt in that instance we were effectively being pushed out of the building, as quickly as they could.nnOn top of this, every train from Kendal was cancelled on the Sunday, especially with no replacement bus service. If it wasn't for a fellow local person helping us out, we'd be stranded on the side of the road, with a 2 year old in the cold. The train station is unmanned, so no assistance is available whatsoever. We had spoken to a local businessman about the travel here in Kendal, and they mentioned that it was renowned for it's poor travel service.nnLastly, all these factors combined together, made a 3 day stay, quite distressing and unenjoyable, especially with a 2 year old. No wonder no one travels to the north, if this is the standard that is set. As The Smiths said 'Its grim up north'.nWe will definitely not be visiting this part of the country again!
Very beautiful hotel. Rooms clean spacious and with great amenities. The location is perfect. You are next to an old bridge on the river. I can’t imagine staying somewhere else in Kendal if I’d go back.
I’ve just stayed here for 2 nights: on the Friday and then I returned on the Sunday, so I had 2 separate rooms to review. I would stay again, but I have good and bad comments about my experience. On the Friday, I put my bags in the room and went straight to the restaurant. I ordered the Steak and Ale pie. The pie itself was nice, but the gravy that came in a little pot on the side was basically just brown water, and I was unable to eat the rest of my meal. During my meal, I was the only one in the restaurant, and the waiter was sat with 2 friends on another table, all eating crisps and drinking etc, it just made me slightly uncomfortable. When I asked to pay, I explained my issue with the food and how I was unable to eat anything other than the pie, and the waiter just said ‘sorry about that’ and took my payment. So I ended up walking into town to get something else to eat later on. When I returned to my room, the curtains didn’t close well at all, but it didn’t impact me too much as I was out of the room for 6am the following morning. When I returned the following day, I had the same issue with the curtains, and the light woke me up quite often after sunrise. The housekeeper also let herself into my room at 10am, even though checkout wasn’t until 11am. But on both nights, I had a genuinely good sleep because the bed was so comfortable. The tea and coffee making facilities were great. The rooms were clean. Great spa facilities. The location is brilliant.
I made an online reservation and needed to amend it to a later date due to a change in work schedule. I did an online amendment and no one got back to me to confirm or deny. I called up and explained and the friendly young lady on the phone informed me that they can amend the booking but I still have to pay the full price. I had missed the free change by 12 hours. Keeping in mind I was moving to a later date and from weekend to weekday, not cancelling, their policy of keeping the full amount is nothing short of disgusting excessive greed. Britain has become a money grabbing place and this is a class example of the kind of practice unnecessarily taking money out of people’s pockets unfairly. Just because it’s policy, doesn’t make it justifiable.
