National Trust - Arlington Court & Carriage Museum

Story

Arlington Court is a neoclassical style country house built 1820-23, situated in the parish of Arlington, next to the parish church of St James, 5 1/4 miles NE of Barnstaple, north Devon, England. It is a Grade II* listed building. The park and gardens are Grade II* listed in the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. The house was commissioned by Colonel John Palmer Chichester (1769-1823) to the design of the North Devon architect Thomas Lee, replacing the earlier Georgian house of about 1790, built on a different site and demolished, designed by John Meadows. Arlington Court was considerably expanded in 1865 by John Palmer Chichester's grandson, Sir Alexander Palmer Bruce Chichester, 2nd Baronet (1842-1881), son of Sir John Palmer Bruce Chichester, 1st Baronet (d.1851). In 1873 according to the Return of Owners of Land, 1873 the Arlington estate comprised about 5,300 acres.Sir Bruce's unmarried daughter and heiress, Rosalie Chichester (d.1949), donated the mansion to the National Trust together with 3500acre two years before her death in 1949.

Beautiful gardens, lovely walks. A great circular walk past the pond, through the first and down the fields towards the lake. Stop off at a bird hide to try to hear the bittern, and on the way back up to the buildings, try to spot some deer. Cafe does good cakes and serves alcohol.

Beautiful grounds, brings a smile to my face every time I go there. Lovely house, not too big, interesting collections, feels like a home. Love all the different carriages, very interesting to read all about the different types, over 40!

Easy parking and access. Interesting coach/carriage museum and house. Good choice of food and good quality ingredients in the cafe. Good program of events throughout the year. Excellent walks in the grounds.

House changes have taken away the wow factor from the morning room the ante room and the drawing room shame . The collections are displayed better than previously. The video of Sir Francis arriving at Plymouth was a bonus. The carriages well displayed and the gold state coach fantastic. Absolutely astounded to see the William Blake drawing hidden in a dark corner of the dining room what are you thinking of National Trust. Attention needed to loose loo seats and hand drier not working.and very muddy car park and drive.
