A truly magical place. I’ve wanted to visit the New Forest for sometime, we picked Matley last minute for safe stay on the day we launched to live full-time in our camper. This place was exactly what we were looking for. After checking in down the road at Denny’s which is mentioned in the email supplied after booking you are pretty much left to it which personally I prefer. The lack of facilities onsite adds to overall experience, with no one taking trips to a WC there’s less foot traffic round site in the evenings and the result is a quieter more serene environment. We liked that pitches aren’t marked and you can park where suits you within reason. The walks are nice and we even found a rope swing in a clearing. We will be back as soon as possible.
Love it here. Keep coming back. Nice secluded plots, just over half hour walk to Lyndhurst along wide track away from road. Can walk in pine forests, oak forests, silver Birch woods, bogs and heathland. 15 minute drive to main supermarkets at Dibden. Very amicable, helpful site managers. Very well kept site with fresh water and waste facilities. Donkeys, Ponies, Deer, bats and birds even a big dragonfly keep us amused while relaxing by our van during the day and night. Not forgetting spectacular sunsets.
Accommodated us last minute on a Sunday night over the Bank Holiday after we were let down elsewhere. SAVIOURS! : Spacious level grass. Trees, New Forest ponies and great walks straight out of the site. Will be sure to return :
OMG. what a beautiful peaceful site. Pitches are big and quite flat. No facilities although there is fresh water and an elson point. And if your lucky you get the horses dropping in on you. Can't wait to go back.
The New Forest is a great place to visit and Matley Wood Campsite could be an excellent place to stay, a get away from it all campsite, It's a site that has no facilities other then a water tap and WC emptying point, you must have your own chemical toilet or you can't stay. The site has no warden on site, to obtain your camping permit, even if you have payed online, you must go to the Dennis Wood Campsite up the road to obtain your permit. There is no signage explaining this on site or online, we woke up the following morning to find a soggy note under our campervan wiper informing us to collect a camping permit. This was the only sign we had that anybody visited the site, We were approached several times by new arrivals asking how to pay for camping. Dogs are allowed onsite but not on the Dennis Wood Site; here lies the problem, many campers at Matley Wood bring their dogs, which as a dog owner is great. But, because there is no supervision on site some dog owners feel that the signs around the site saying, keep dogs on leads, does not apply to them. We had a very disturbing confrontation with a dog owner who's 3 dogs were chasing a ball across the site, when we asked the owners to but one of their dogs on a lead when it came onto our pitch and approached our dog; they did not take kindly to being asked to put their dog on a lead. Other people arrive, open there vehicle door, out jumps a dog which dashes off to do it's business! If you have issues with dogs or just don't like them, best avoid this site. I feel with a site warden or at least someone doing the rounds several times a day would at least put off most dog owners from letting their dogs off its lead whilst on site.
Beautiful, back to nature. If you like to camp off grid you won't find a lovelier clearing in the forest for your caravan or motor home. If you want loos, showers and entertainment it's not the place for you.
At the top of the hill but sheltered a bit by the trees, but still gets lashed by the wind and rain during south-westerleys and lots of standing water in winter. Some nice old oaks in neighbouring Matley wood, but they've been dropping a lot of branches recently even during quiet spells in summer, so don't stand around under them for too long!
A basic campsite in the trees an easy cycle into Lyndhurst and through the forest to Brockenhurst. Just remember to register at Denny Wood site just up the road.
Great little campsite. Ideal for a quiet getaway. No facilities here so you need your own loo etc.
Just spent a couple of days here and it was lovely. Got woken up by donkeys around the camp which kids though were amazing. No facilities here but that was what we were looking for. Very quiet aswell a real break and get away from it all place
