John Rylands Library

About

Welcome to The John Rylands Library. Free to visit and open 7 days a week, it was created more than 100 years ago as a gift to Manchester and its people

Story

The John Rylands Library, Deansgate, was founded by Enriqueta Rylands in memory of her husband John Rylands. In 1889 the architect Basil Champneys designed the striking gothic building, which took ten years to build and was opened to public readers on 1 January 1900.

The Library became part of The University of Manchester in 1972 and currently holds the Special Collections of the John Rylands University Library. Mrs Rylands' memorial to her husband is now part of the third largest academic library in the United Kingdom, and the Deansgate building houses over 250,000 printed volumes, and well over a million manuscripts and archival items.

Located tlin the center of Manchester, this represent one of the best place you should visit here. A full immersion in history of this city. Ancient library with a unique books, you could be lucky enough to get a free example of how to stamp in ancient way. Highly recommended. You can also study there because it is still a library.
What an iconic library. The more I look up, the more spectacular it is. Beautiful corridors and statues. Such an amazing time in the library. It would be great to put up signs of "silence" because I saw people studying and families who kept talking out loud in the same room.
A truly magical place. My only wish is that it was housed in a garden instead of next to other buildings. It needs more space around it to view it properly.
It's magical, stepping away from the towers and glass into an absolutely beautiful library. The architecture is incredible and there is so much history I enjoyed every minute and wish I had known about it sooner.
