I made a brief visit before meeting friends at The Bank pub underneath. It's a very impressive library with friendly, informative staff. I'll come back and visit the cafe next time. There's also a nice selection of books on Manchester that are for sale.
beautiful space! i believe they mentioned it was 200 years old? amazing. they have to buzz you in, but it’s free. stunning shelves of antique books [you’re not allowed to touch] small area to sit & be served from their cafe!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A bit of a hidden gem here - a large, single room library dating from the late 1800s. Friendly and welcoming staff greet you as you walk in to a relaxed atmosphere surrounded by wonderful books. You have to ring the door bell to gain access, and the library itself is at the top of a few flights of stairs.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
A hidden gem in the centre of Manchester. A beautiful listed building accessed by stairs. Wow factor on entering. Warm, friendly, informative greeting. so beautiful inside! Historic books, exhibitions, so interesting. Amazing glass ceiling and dark wood interior. Children welcome. Lovely menu and food and drink available actually in the Library. We had brunch and it was perfect, good prices and served with a smile. Gift shop too. We'll worth a visit folks and as it's a charity, worth supporting.
A private library but with a public café and exhibit area in a central room. Down to earth tea and coffee just filter or cafetiere. Didn't try the food/meals menu. All very atmospheric. Up a few flights of stairs from the street but with a handy chair on each landing for those in need of a rest.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Really fabulous experience visiting the library. We enjoyed tea/ coffee and cake in the main library itself. The staff made sure we were kept topped up with the drinks throughout our visit. The old Victorian library has attempted to keep as much of its original books and architecture in place obviously ignoring structural adjustments required. Great place to visit for free to see the exhibits that change regularly. Thank you to Alice who gave us a great tour of the library and to give us all the history of the library and insights to how it is used now.
Ring the bell to gain entry, and then walk up several flights of stairs to this beautiful old library! The smell of old books hits you when you walk through the door such a wonderful smell!. Friendly staff greet you upon arrival, and explain which bits are for non members to browse, as well as any exhibitions they currently have on. There's a café and shop, though we didn't purchase anything. Well worth a visit!
Beautiful building, tucked away, and a real tranquil haven. I loved the highlighted displays of books in the collection. Poor Shirley, in such a state of disrepair, but it's wonderful that the library are raising funds for a full restoration. The little shop area, with prints, postcards and books was too tempting. I loved my visit.
Wow, this is such a hidden gem in the city. I was waiting for the bus across the street and found the little door. After a few rounds of stairs, behind a door there is an amazing historic library. The front desk is super friendly and informative. High recommend you stop by.
