This is a very interesting small museum in Manchester. You don't need to be in law enforcement to appreciate it, either. It has some very interesting exhibits detailing true crime stories during its history in Manchester. I think that's probably the type of person that will get the most from this experience. Someone really into true crime stories and docs. That said, there were other fascinating parts of the museum. Such as how the police force and the approach to policing has evolved in Manchester over time. This is a great little museum to burn an hour or two at while in Manchester. Just be mindful of there opening hours. They are not traditional museum hours and vary throughout the week.
Museum is open to the public on a Tuesday and education groups can book through the week. Nice museum, very helpful staff, free entry, and lots of exhibits showing the history of GMP. Quite text based, lots of reading but it is very interesting, they have displays of the histories of the uniform as it has changed, former police vehicles, some examples of murder investigations, plus the old victorian prison cells all set in the former police station. Small gift shop at the end with some reasonably priced items
This is well worth the visit but here is a warning for you don't visit at half term. At the door to welcome was a George Dixon lookalike with his "morning all", a lot of the staff were former Peelers or Rozzers telling their stories and experiences as plods in Manchester. One very big down side was walking up and down those stairs to the court room I did not find it easy
My 7 year old daughter and i just visited the museum on a Thursday in half term, we expected it to be very busy but it wasn't, we entered straight away. My daughter absolutely loves the police force so this has been on our list for quite some time but the opening times made it tricky, its only open on Tuesdays then sometimes Thursdays during school holidays you can check the Facebook page. She loved trying on the different uniforms and seeing the police bikes no other vehicles, we thought there would be a car. We collected our tickets to the court room as we entered, and what fun she had in there, called to the stand to be a witness as a little pig against the big bad very funny wolf! We then made our way down to the cells where we met a lovely volunteer who talked with her and answered all her questions and then to the charge desk to be shown different equipment the force have used through time to the present day. The museum is only small but we were there for 1hr 30m and she loved it. One of the best teams of volunteers we have come across, everyone we interacted with were lovely and insightful! Theres a little gift shop at the exit where she upgraded some of her costume pieces, not overpriced either like they usually are. I will add we were very pleased to see our manx symbol on the treasure hunt sheet
Very interesting Museum. It's mostly only open on a Tuesday and is run by volunteers, who are very helpful and informative. There's lots to see, including the old police cells, old uniforms, and police equipment. Some pretty terrifying weapons also on display that have been confiscated over the decades.
Fantastic little museum. Definitely worth a visit as it's free entry. Very educated guides full of knowledge. The replica courtroom upstairs is very good.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
We had a really great time here. A warm and friendly welcome. Lots of really interesting items showing the whole history of the police force. It was fascinating to see how the modern day police force evolved from the night watchmen, the peelers and through the decades. The volunteers are friendly, approachable, very knowledgeable and genuinely enjoy showing the public around. We especially enjoyed chatting to Norman about his time in the force. I would highly recommend a visit if you're in Manchester.
An interesting museum with lots to look at. Friendly and knowledgeable volunteers, all ex-police officers, some of which worked at the police station that the museum is based in.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
An interesting museum to visit - my 7 yr s old boy loves it! It is not very big so an hour was enough for us. Plenty of car parks private within walking distance.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
This was a fascinating museum to visit with some friends, where we were welcomed at the entrance by a guide! He was very interactive and talked to us in proper detail during the first two rooms, including talking about the separate police forces that are shown on a map. Many interesting exhibits are present, such as former police uniform, dangerous weapons, police bikes and valuables! Another guide took us through the court that almost seemed like it was still running, an area that is equalled by the fancy dress part.
