The couple who walked us though the museum were very nice and gave us a wonderful explaining of the history of the Jewish community
A true hidden gem. The IJM houses the history of the Jewish people's relationship and history within the Island of Ireland. Loads of artifacts and a full period synagogue. Highly worth a visit
So exciting to find this museum in Dublin. Such an interesting history. Very knowledgeable staff. Synagogue upstairs is wonderful. I said the shehecheyanu in joy for being there. Did not expect to see any Hebrew in Dublin. So cool! Bought the book.
The Irish Jewish Museum is a small collection of artefacts and articles of the Jewish community in Ireland housed in a former synagogue and residence in Portobello. The winter opening hours are very limited Sunday mornings/early afternoons only and the cover charge is €5, so be prepared. There are some lovely objects here, including an 18th century ark cover. A poignant sense of the dwindling community pervades the place. Staff are friendly and very willing to share their knowledge.
Definitely worth a visit to see how the Irish Jewish community has lived throughout the years.
A little treasure preserving the history of the Jewish People in Ireland and their massive contributions to Irish society.
Visited this little museum while visiting Dublin last year with my sister and 9 year old nephew. We had a lovely guided tour of the museum, with personal stories and conversation. We expected to learn more about our Irish heritage while on this trip, but it was so great to also show my nephew and us more about his Jewish heritage. 100% would recommend after the pandemic!
We walked from our hotel in the city center to visit the museum. Hidden away on a side street in a residential area, this tiny museum is worth a visit if you have roots in the history of the Jewish people. The docents are friendly, the isles are tiny, but, this museum packs an emotional touch. I knew nothing of the history of the Jewish people in Ireland. This museum tells the history of an entire community. The displays are excellent. The story of Chaim Weitzman and his ties to Dublin and this Dublin Jewish community are interesting and very informative.
We really enjoyed our visit here. It's good to read about the museum first-at it's website. It's also a bit sad, as there is very little in tends of Jewish-Irish community. Surprisingly, I found a picture of my father hanging in the museum. He was a renown professor of Jewish folklore and must have visited the community and lecture there I guess sometimes in the 1980s.
There are not many Jews in Ireland and in Dublin, and there is only one Jewish museum in Dublin -- but it is a very nice museum. It is packed with valuable and very well preserved exhibits, it is managed and maintained by very kind and knowledgeable people. There is even the synagogue on the first floor. Definitely worth seeing!
