Highgate Wood

Story

Highgate Wood is a 28 hectare area of ancient woodland in North London, lying between East Finchley, Highgate Village, and Muswell Hill. It was originally part of the ancient Forest of Middlesex which covered much of London, Hertfordshire and Essex and was mentioned in the Domesday Book. It lies in the London Borough of Haringey, but is owned and managed by the City of London Corporation. The London Borough of Haringey contains four ancient woods. These are Highgate Wood, Queen's Wood, Coldfall Wood and Bluebell Wood. Highgate Wood is shown on the Ordnance Survey map of Middlesex in 1886 more or less in its present formation, but known by the name "Gravelpit Wood".Flora and faunaThe flora and fauna in the wood have been managed to varying degrees by humans through the ages.Predominantly an oak, hornbeam and holly wood, Highgate Wood is also home to more than 50 other tree and shrub species which have self-seeded there. The Wild Service Tree, a rare deciduous tree with brown berries, can be found in Highgate Wood. Presence of the Wild Service Tree is commonly taken as an indicator of ancient woodland.

In the whispering woods, I lost and found myself The wilderness and liveliness of this place gives me peace, newness and freshness. This is one of the great escapes. This is the first place of London which has forced me to fall in love again. Being always a nature lover, I can find solace and deeper understanding of myself. The tranquility of natural settings replace the constant noise and chaos of the concrete-progressive society with unparalleled peace and calmness. If you are in London and looking for some natural beauty where you can connect yourself with nature, must visit this place. Not too big, this is soo beautiful. From Old Street, it's only 1 hour distance. Beautiful place. #absorbing_the_energy #newday #naturelovers #naturephotography #nature #london #livelife #green
One of the few parks in London which are more forest-like. It has a lot of trees yet there is a large field in the center, too
One of my favourite places in London. Highgate Woods is such a lovely place to visit and go for walks in.
Lovely park, which once your inside makes you feeling like you're not even in the city anymore. You can't hear traffic noise or even see any buildings. Lovely paths to follow through the woods, a nice open field, excellent playgrounds and a great cafe all make it worthwhile coming here. We love in Enfield and we'll definitely be back!
Great experience, great for picnic, sports and has a cafe as well.
The park itself is very big, has lots of facilities however it is not baby or child friendly at all. There are too many big and dangerous looking dogs not under sufficient control. I did not feel safe with my 10 month old baby who was sat beside me on the grass. A big dog with sharp teeth did get close in proximity, the owner called the dog from a 20m distance but the dog stood there for a few minutes next to us. The dog was not on a leash and the owner did not seem bothered. The dog then went near an elderly couple and an old lady gave a fright. In my opinion these dogs visiting the park should have a designated area because visitors do not feel safe enough to enjoy the park. Anything could have happened to my or my baby. Most owners have no regard at all and do not attempt to take their dogs under control. Playground: Nice playground area for children and age appropriate Dog-friendliness: Too many dogs not under control roaming the park, lacking safety and security. Picnics and snacks I would highly discourage. Dogs should have their own designated area within the park.
It's a Wooderful get it place. Beautiful large nature area, woods, fields, cafe, toilets. It's lovely around 8 at evening in summer as fairly quiet and peaceful. Only thing I don't like is that you get asked to leave at 9pm as they close Nature for the night. Coming from the country I've never heard of such a thing. A whole woods being closed
If you want to escape from the city noise, highgate being a 25 min from the center it’s a perfect place. And highgate woods it’s the cherry on the cake. A beautiful conserved zone with natural woods and a lot of history. You can have a nice walk in a whimsical land without the noise of the cars on a colorful environment completely out of the London scenery. Tall trees and a lot is crazy squirrels that, if you are lucky, you can see screaming at the dogs, actually part of them can reflect the very spirit of a commuter some times. Here you have a perfect place to walk your dogs, with poo bins across the place, an amazing zone to jog under the shadow of tall trees and the beautiful smell of nature with one or two leg burning hills. If you have kids, the second zone is perfect for you with activity areas and a play ground just next to the cafe which I have never been. Tree soccer fields maybe more, are up to the ones that are more into the group activities, normally full with kids too and families distributed around. Highgate woods is the perfect place to have a nice menta rest. For a loner of the beautiful benches with memoirs of the old walkers, to the scenery out of a classical painting from a crazy renaissance era.
Beautiful green space between Highgate and East Finchley. Nice play area for kids. The woodland is maintained by rangers who are doing a great job at protecting them biodiversity and the thriving vegetation.
