Story

Hammersmith Hospital, formerly the Military Orthopaedic Hospital, and later the Special Surgical Hospital, is a major teaching hospital in west London. It is part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, and is associated with the Imperial College Faculty of Medicine. Confusingly the hospital is not in Hammersmith but is located north of White City adjacent to Wormwood Scrubs and East Acton.HistoryOriginsThe hospital's origins begin in 1902, when the Hammersmith Poor Law Guardians decided to erect a new workhouse and infirmary on a 14acre site at the north side of Du Cane Road somewhat to the north of Shepherd's Bush. The land, adjacent to Wormwood Scrubs Prison, was purchased for £14,500 from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. A temporary corrugated iron building was erected on the site in 1902 to provide care for victims of a smallpox epidemic that had taken place in the winter of 1901-2. The buildings were designed by the firm of Giles, Gough and Trollope. The infirmary occupied the front part of the site with a central administrative building flanked by pavilion ward blocks linked by a single storey corridor running east-west. A laundry, boiler-house and workshops lay at the centre of the site.

Was on a visit. Noting the cqc rating, the hospital appeared clean and well kept and staff helpful and friendly. Visited the chapel, through small is a welcoming oasis of peace and quiet. Includes nice simplist stations of the Cross, icons and stain glass windows. Worth spending time here.
I had a quick and efficient experience at Hammersmith hospital. Paid parking was available and there were a few buses that can take you right in front of the hospital. Signage was good and everything was easy to find. A few cafes with plenty of toilets inside. My appointment was perfectly on time. I didn’t have to wait and the doctor and nurses were knowledgable. I was happy with the experience.
I was admitted in Kerr ward in Hammersmith hospital. During my stay one week, the care I received from the two doctors was exceptional . The entire team at the clinic displayed a high level of professionalism. I felt very secure with the doctors and nurses. Everything explained to me into detail. I will never forget how well I was looked after by the staff. Thank yoy .
My husband had an MRI here. All the staff in imaging were very friendly, happy and very helpful, particularly the guy on the reception. There was no wait for the appointment, he was seen immediately! The hospital is very clean too, which was reassuring.
Appalling receptionist. Said could not search for my elderly friend as I did not have her date of birth. Wouldn’t find out what ward she was in for me, which meant I was unable to visit her. He then put the phone down on me. Dismissive. Uncaring. My friend was an extremely vulnerable and isolated woman with no mobile phone who subsequently spent her birthday alone in hospital. The nurses also refused to give her access to a phone. People involved should seriously consider whether it’s appropriate they work as hospital employees. This also reflects terribly on the overall management and training.
My experience with Hammersmith hospital was very negative. I had appointment with Endocrinology unit doctor R. Minhas and doctor- consultant J. Todd. I have a long term condition more than 10 years and have to monitor it regularly. There are two options to monitor which are blood tests and MRI. Due to breastfeeding, blood tests are not representative. The only other available option in my case is MRI. I explained that due to breastfeeding I will not be able to do blood tests for at least next year. My last MRI scan was in 2022 and I need a follow up. I am not sure the doctor was fully competent as she left room twice to go consult with the doctor- consultant. She then could not logically explain why I am refused the next available option MRI since blood tests do not work in my case. She kept referring to opinion of her doctor- consultant. Then when I asked to speak with the doctor- consultant directly and the doctor all together, I was refused. I said that I am okay to wait until they speak to all her other patients and we can look into my case. First they said okay and I can wait, so I waited, but later on the doctor sent their registrar or someone else just to say that they are both busy and they would not be available at all !. I was also very late in my pregnancy at that time - no consideration was given. Overall, spent 3 hours at the hospital, very disappointing.
Located next to Wormwood scrubs means there is usually parking available. The hospital has some free blue badge parking which is very helpful. There are no nearby tube stations but there are some buses which are not always easy to use for blind / wheelchair users. Once inside there are wide corridors with even surfaces for wheelchairs. There is a sloped tunnel to get from the front to the back which might be hard work if you are self propelling. Staff are friendly and helpful. As regular visitors we very much appreciate this hospital.
Hi to everyone in renal transplant and clinic blood test, All Doctors and Nurses thank you very much. for my second kidney transplant all of you they are very helpful I have been on Hammersmith hospital from 2021 and continue with them every doctors or nurses they do amazing job and very helpful god bless you All.
I have been severely ill for the last 6 days after getting e coli from this hospital, I was first admitted for a simple SVT procedure which did not work, now after 4-5 procedures I still don't know if its been successful because I ended up in the intensive care where the treatment I got ended up with a severe asthma attack I'd had to be resuscitated again! And that was just the beginning of a total car crash, the intensive care unit was left unattended when unfortunately I had an episode where i could not breath, urgent ventilation was required but no one to administer it, a gentleman also on the ward managed finally to get the attention of a doctor who was unable to do the simplest thing I was begging this doctor to turn my ventilation machine on as it had been unplugged but she did not have the basic knowledge of how to plug it in to a plug socket and walked away from me leaving me fighting for my life! This brought on a severe asthma attack for which I needed resuscitation from again. I now have had a "virus" and after many enquiries as to which one it was because the antibiotics were very nasty I was finally told it is E. Coli and this was just the start of a total car crash, finally I told them I wished to be discharged to another hospital where the doctors knew what was wrong me, but no hospital wants an E. Coli patient, I stopped all treatment and medication after pleading with them that I was not on the right meds, I turned to Dr Google and realised that I a life threatening condition brought on by oxygen poisoning oxygen should never be admitted to an astmatic at a high rate, I self medicated and now am on the mend, my heart was racing at 120 within one hour of self medication it dropped to below 90!
UnfortunatelyI have attended here a few times due to an illness but this is the best hospital I have attended. The staff are all friendly and willlingly to show you around and the wait time for appointments is decent. The one and only criticism is this is a big hospital with many buildings and it is hard to navigate without even with the sign directions which is minor .
