GoMA

About

GoMA is the most visited modern art gallery in Scotland. Entry is free.

Story

GoMA is housed in an iconic building located in the heart of Glasgow, which it shares with the city centre library. It plays an important part in the city’s rich heritage which continues today. For over 100 years the building was a centre for business and commercial exchange where information and goods were traded. GoMA continues that philosophy of exchange by being a centre for people to gather, discuss and learn, inspired by the art it collects and shows. GoMA believes in working with every community of the city and has gained international recognition for its social engagement programming.

Contemporary art is heavily represented in this gallery. Right in the center of Glasgow, it is easily accessible, entrance is free and there are multiple floors and spaces to enjoy art. The main hall exhibits two local artists at the moment. The building itself is a beautiful neo-classical melange and is currently undergoing restoration. There is also nice cafe and library in the basement with easily accessible restrooms.
Hard to get the full experience whilst Goma is under renovation externally. The building itself is an integral part of its story and infused with the collections. Like all museums in Glasgow it has free entry and is continuously adapting its main exhibition space gallery 1 so on future visits you might find the art more or less to your taste. “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” as they say. Adelante!
More than art. Good layout, cute gift store, and little library and cafe in the basement. I don’t really understand modern art, but I love that it exists for residents for free. There’s also creative stations for you to engage with the the art and create art. They also put a lot of focus on making sure resident visitors know the resources available for them like free feminine hygiene resources for menstruating women, food programs for those in scarcity. They are doing more than most museums of modern art. Love that.
Just add a lovely week in the west end of Glasgow, spent hours in the kelvingrove and Hunterian at Glasgow university, had a trip out to the burrell collection and came to GOMA, what a stupid acronym, I didn't recognise what it meant, thought the building was closed in repair and walked on by! Suggest you put a sign on the front door, next to the beautiful statue, with a sign with an arrow pointing to the door saying" gallery of modern art" On a lighter note, have a look at this Huddersfield up and coming painter,he as had work shown at the Walker gallery in Liverpool.
Great place to visit while in Glasgow. Once your finished looking at the art they have a great library donwstairs where you can get a quiet cuppa.
Worth it because it is free and has variety. Many different contemporary art galleries and areas for kids as well.
It is a lovely place, genuinely modern, and a great experience after all the “classic” museums.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Beautiful building in a central location. It’s easy to find and entrance is free. Whilst we both prefer more traditional artworks what we saw was thought provoking and we came away with much to discuss. Staff made us very welcome and the very jazzy shop was nice
Quite compact but nicely laid out gallery if modern art right in the centre of Glasgow. Most of the exhibitions are free though occasionally the gallery will stage a large exhibition with an entrance fee such as the 2023 Banksy retrospective. For me it's one of Glasgows highlights.
Interesting small permanent collection in a antique building. Bansky show was in main gallery and a admission with a timed ticket was required. Furthermore the artist required all phones be locked in a pouch to prevent photography. So much for free street art for the people. Exit through the gift shop.
