Had been trying to visit here for a while but opening was limited due to their filming 'Throwdown'. We were free this weekend and were initially disappointed that we had missed the boat and it was now going to be closed until April however we spotted that they were hosting a one day ceramics fair. We thought we would visit and at least see some of the museum. We were pleasantly surprised to enter the fair for free and also be given free access to the whole museum, win-win. There were some parts of the museum that had limited disabled accessibility but it would be a great resource for students studying the history of pottery.
Had a brilliant visit here to break the journey between Manchester and Bristol. All the staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and the museum itself fantastic- the kids all especially enjoyed the flushing exhibition! Was only planning to stay an hour or so but was there over 3 hours with no bored children… will definitely revisit and couldn’t recommend more highly, one of our favourite museums ever, Thank you!
Visited 21.04.24, such a lovely and interesting place.nIt is wheelchair accessible and child friendly. Perfect for school trips and has a gift shop.
This is my second glowing review of the museum.nI'm a Potter who left in 1973 to work and live in Sheffield.nAbout 10 years ago my wife and I visited the museum with my elderly mum: Ethel who lived in The Potteries all of her life.nShe had a memorable visit, the highlight was meeting the ladies in the fettling room. She suffered with dementia but on seeing the ladies at their trade she started to reminisce about her time as a fettler, the next minute she picked up a tool and started fettling!nThe ladies found us as we were leaving and presented mum with her fettled piece. A day not to forget.nSadly mum passed away during Covid.nWe had taken dear friends to the museum to the Craft Day on Saturday, they are huge fans of pottery and The Great Pottery Throw Down. We entered the same room and memories of mum flooded back. I couldn't help sharing the memory with a couple of lovely visitors who were really moved by the story only to be further amazed when one of the fettlers Pauline came forward and said she was one of the ladies who helped mum all those years ago! She remembered the fine detail of our visit.nWe brushed away a few tears but she wouldn't let us go until she found a Rose and a Forget Me Not. Both are in a vase and here is a photo of the lovely lady with us both.nThis Museum is a jewel with a wonderful history and staff who are the salt of the earth. Thank you once again Gladstone.
Very interesting. Glad to be a potter in this era . Exhibition of wc’s and tiles both very interesting and nice!nAnd I made a rose with help from a ‘flower girl’. Great experience
