Stayed here for our 18th anniversary. The staff was very friendly. BUT........BUT..... Our room had almonds on the floor....we didn't bring almonds as a snack. We ate at the Epoch.....we saw our waitress one time when she took our order. The bus boy was the one to get my husband another drink. I ordered hot tomato soup and roasted mushrooms.....it was as if I ordered gazpacho, not hot soup. My husband's steak was even cold. We mentioned, nicely, as the flavors were fantastic, and nothing was done really to try and make it better. They were happy we were nice about it. They said thanks for understanding, but didn't really try to make it better.. That same night: they had event downstairs. It boomed until late. My pillow vibrated with the music. I am glad the party was awesome, but it was not pleasant for relaxing guests. We don't get away often, and this was not worth the mount of money we spent to do so.
Very dirty. Our room had multiple bugs in it and plumbing issues. Our second room was slightly cleaner but also had plumbing issues. If you like historical, older, dirty buildings then this is the hotel for you. If you prefer clean and modern hotels then this is not the hotel for you. The staff was very friendly and kind with great customer service and parking was great but I didn’t even want to sleep here after seeing how dirty our first room was. Also, the restaurant is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Will never stay here again. Last time when we stayed, it’s a room in a very tight corner of the building, above this pipe outside that blew out smoke every few minutes. We couldn’t sleep for the whole night. This time I especially asked ahead of time not to be assigned to a room close to that pipe. But then we got this room with slope ceiling 3rd floor. We hit our heads a few times in the super tiny bathroom while showering. We checked In on Thursday, and I booked the room many days ahead. When we arrived, the hotel was literally empty. I don’t understand why they didn’t offer us a better room. There is also no fridge in the room unbelievable. One table light is broken. Room is tiny and dark and doesn’t look clean. We didn’t even bother with their continental breakfast this time. With a restaurant on site, they should provide a better option. Worst of all, the bed is so horrible, the worst bed I ever slept on, more like those sofa bed type of mattress. And now I’m suffering severe lower back pain after 3 nights of stay. Will never book Exeter Inn again!
Pros: -Historic, walkable location -Friendly staff -Easy access to room areas from parking lots -Pretty courtyard and dining room -Close to town Cons: -Room cleanliness multiple trash items found in the room to suggest it was not fully cleaned -Ammenities lacking no mini fridge available in suite, no blackout shades in bedroom of suite -Room desperately needed TLC peeling wallpaper, bad patch areas of wallpaper and drywall from assumed water damage, poorly insulated bathroom with drafts, cracked caulking in bathrooms, slow plumbing/drain issues - though staff were receptive and kind to the feedback about issues. Personally I wouldn't stay here again. The building architecture and area are beautiful, but so many unkempt details make the room feel like it was worth half the price charged.
Great atmosphere and food is also good. The service is very good here as well. The prices are a bit high but that seems to be the case at most places. Epoch is a nice treat.Service: 5/5
Great staff, as soon as i entered my room I instantly smelled clean and freshness!!! Very comfy bed and was excited to have a k cup machine in my room for morning coffee. One night stay with a nice continental in the morning, they also had tea and cookies for my arrival in the lobby. Very happy with my stay Rooms: 5/5
This is an old property in need of some TLC. Apart from the filthy carpeting, closure of restaurant and bar on Sunday’s and Monday’s remedied by front desk providing you a list of local options, many of which are also closed on Monday the stay was below expectations, although it is priced accordingly. Rooms are small which is ok but the plastic/disposable cups in bathroom reminded me of a Motel 6. There is actually little decorative connection between the historic town and the prep school. Beyond a few prints, the hallway walls are bare. The hotel is essentially 3 “D’s: dark, dirty and dingy. Exterior is in a state of disrepair and all the window sashes and trim are peeling badly reinforcing the overall neglect. Some positives: the bed is comfortable; the bathroom fittings are classic. Front desk folks are kind and informative and the cookies are a nice touch. Overall, just ok. Was expecting a bit more charm given the iconic town and adjacent prep school.
I just went to work in the kitchen as a temp but the staff was so kind and helpful... I was raised in Exeter but had never been in here before and its beautiful plus I can speak for the food and kitchen staff as clean, hard working and delicious output!!! I love the way they plate the dishes with fries! Just my 2 cents...
Overall a great little hidden gem. Sadly the restaurant was not open so didn't get to experience. Rooms: Rooms are dated but quaint and super comfy. Nearby activities: Walking distance to a handful of restaurants. Safety: Felt very safe in this location. Walkability: Saw tons of people walking around. Food & drinks: Restaurant is closed on Sunday and Monday- when we were there. Cute dining and bar area.
Great weekend stay with my wife! The room was nice, comfortable bed not always the case in inns. The Epoch restaurant had excellent food. Staff was very friendly and very attentive even though they are short staffed like everywhere. Great location within walking distance of the beautiful historic Exeter downtown.Rooms: 4/5
