Story

It is thought there was a dwelling on this site as early as 1086, in the time of the Domesday Book. The stonemasons responsible for the construction of Exeter Cathedral may have lodged here.

The present building you see is substantially 16th Century, but the actual date of the different parts varies considerably. Unlike today, much building in the past was piecemeal, with new rooms added as necessary. Most of the fabric is local stone, but the old brewhouse at the rear is traditional Devon cob. This has the remains of the hop drying floor, and is adjacent to a large brewing chimney.

Great-grandfather was William John Gibbings from Clyst St. George. He moved into the Inn in 1897, and our family has been there ever since. The current licensee is Caroline Cheffers-Heard, his Great Grand-daughter. She is the fourth generation, her daughter Riannon will be the fifth, and Amelia, born in April 2008, will be the sixth generation.

The Bridge has a long history of promoting real ale. Ales from local breweries and particularly famous or select ales from the rest of the country are always available, although the actual list varies from week to week. There are usually up to ten real ales available.

This is a real treasure of an English public house. The interior decor has not altered in over a hundred years. The ceiling of the bar is unashamedly stained with wood soot and nicotine stains from days gone by. It is an old and preserved building that speaks to my retirement age soul as a reminder of how real pubs used to be before 'bistro' became our most prevalent oxymoron. The pint I drank was dark and full of flavour and my only regret was we had not arrived in time for many more. The pubs great location outside Topsham on the River Clyst affords the numerous riverside tables a fantastic view of the river and the wildlife. Food here is simple and is not the type that requires cooking. Pubs were once for drinking and a light snack that enabled you to stay a little longer. This is what The Bridge does. Simple snack food. I was lucky enough to see the meeting room at the side of the building that is licensed for weddings and also holds numerous evenings of classical, folk and other music. It's rare these days to plan a journey around a visit to a pub but I can think of few better ways to spend a warm Saturday afternoon than drinking excellent ale in this excellent pub. It's also a few minutes walk from the local train so driving need not be an option.
Fantastic pub. One of the best in the country. Great beer and food. Friendly staff and one of the most outstanding interiors you'll find. Google seems reluctant to fix the hours: it's open noon-230pm and 530pm6pm Sun-930pm everyday. Parking: Small irregular-shaped car park. No marked spaces.
A must ,one of the most unusual unique pubs iv ever visited. Very hospitable owners and staff who go out of their way to show you around and make you feel at home . A great place to spend a few cheeky hours. Thr beers are a must !!
nice view, friendly service and decent price for a pintService: 5/5
Lovely traditional pub. Delicious food and friendly staff.Food: 5/5
What a brilliant OLD traditional pub. It has some wonderful Ales and Ciders to try. There are a few limited seats in the pub jn a couple of very small rooms with old furniture and tables. Both these rooms have a fire. They serve some limited food options like sandwiches crisps as well as toastie and pasties. There is a seating area outside with a few benches and a covered area too Opening hours are very old school. Opening at Midday and closing at 230pm everyday. Reopening at 530pm closing at 930pm. There is also a larger indoor room that accommodates live music. A brilliant place that is well worth seeking out. You may even be given a little guided tour too.
Lovely beer choice and nice homely foods, a wonderful river views Food: 5/5
This pub is the only one I have visited without pumps in the bar. Instead the barman disappears if you are in the inside bar and draws your pint direct from the cask in the cellar which is also the outside bar - it’s in a hillside. Therefore there are no lines to get dirty. Anyway, whatever the reason, they served me a pint of Branoc Branscombe Brewery that was absolutely perfect. Oh, and the pub is also in a beautiful location. And you can walk from Topsham station, or take the bus.
Stunning views, exceptional beer that changes all the time - they only have 5 beers on at once, 1 barrel of each so once it has gone, something different comes on. Simple food, pasties, sandwiches & ploughmans. Nothing else except the usual crisps/nuts. And staff who genuinely seem to love the place! And it shows.
Quirky pub, love how the ale is served directly from the barrel just as it was back in the day. Family run business and very interesting history to the place. Lots of parking and outdoor seating, coupled with an awesome view of the River Clyst.
