Elephant & Castle Station

Story

Elephant & Castle railway station is a National Rail station that serves Newington and Walworth, south London. Along with the London Underground station of the same name, it is located in the London Borough of Southwark and is in both Travelcard Zone 1 and 2. The station is managed by Thameslink, with services operated by both Thameslink and Southeastern. There is out-of-station interchange with the nearby Elephant & Castle tube station.LayoutThe London, Chatham and Dover Railway built the station on a brick viaduct in 1863. It has two entrances, one on Elephant Road and one connected to the upper level of the Elephant and Castle shopping centre. There is a departures indicator in the shopping centre as well as separate platform indicators in the ticket hall. There are four platforms, two being on the island between the lines. The station is not directly connected to the London Underground station. To change from the Underground it is necessary to leave the Underground station (the Northern Line exit is nearer), pass through the ticket barrier and then walk either through or round the shopping centre. Four staircases provide the only access to the platforms, as there are no lifts or escalators.

Elephant and Castle has changed a bit since the 2000s. It seems to be going a rejuvenation program so.looking better, but today, it was grey and dull due to the weather. The pink elephant is sadly no longer there ... I.have put a picture of where it once stood, hopefully will find it in someone's back garden in years to come!
An interesting and quirky place, kind of feels like you've entered some sort of forgotten world at first when walking through the covered market. It gets very busy here at rush hour, and as others have mentioned if you're relatively young and spritely you can use the stairs to beat the lift to street level!
Feels like a stairway to hell with how hot the Bakerloo line is. Great connections though.
Early mornings at the moment quite for Bakerloo line. Not busy till Oxford Circus station
A good station for getting trains to/from other stations. No sign of an elephant or a castle, so the name is a bit misleading. You're better off going to London Zoo or Buckingham Castle for that. Nice roundabout.
Because I really like the elephants from Africa.
One of the entrances are currently closed
