A beautiful statue commemorating a truly remarkable woman, murdered for helping people, she is definitely someone who needs to be remembered.
Nurse Edith Cavell 1865-1915, shot at dawn in Brussels for helping allied soldiers escape to Holland in the early stages of World War I,
This gentleman did an amazing picture of the Queen to remember her on Sep 18, 2022
Wonderful area to sit and relax as well as to learn more about history. It is important to see more and more monuments and statues made for women and the profound part they’ve played in history and the betterment of society. Access to other attractions, as well as to the transit system and Trafalgar Square, is easy from here.
Edith Cavell is remembered in the Church of England calendar of "saints" on October 12th.
A prominent position for this heroine of of WW1,Edith Cavell was a nurse who found herself stranded behind enemy lines in Belgium. She nursed all servicemen, regardless of which uniform they wore, but was involved with the escape of 200 allied soldiers, and for this she was shot by the Germans Her body was repatriated after the war, and she is buried in Norwich Cathedral
An Edith Cavell Memorial Service is held each year on October 12th and it is a morning service which usually starts around 10.30 am. Edith Cavell was a Nurse who was shot by firing squad in the First World War by the Germans. This year the Ambassador for Belgium, representative from the American Red Cross, Lord Mayor of London and Armed Forces all turned up. Go every year to remember a remarkable woman who was shot, but treated ALL soldiers whichever side they were on.
This is a beautiful memorial statue between Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square, dedicated to a remarkable humanitarian woman to be remembered.
Great memorial. Edith Louisa Cavell /ˈkævəl/; 4 December 1865 – 12 October 1915 was a British nurse. She is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from both sides without discrimination and in helping some 200 Alliedsoldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during the First World War, for which she was arrested. She was accused of treason, found guilty by a court-martial and sentenced to death. Despite international pressure for mercy, she was shot by a German firing squad. Her execution received worldwide condemnation and extensive press coverage.
Nicely done monument, which makes some of us check up who Edith Cavell was. Mostly though it gets used as some free seating
