Chelsea Old Church

Story

The Chelsea Old Church, also known as All Saints, is an Anglican church, on Old Church Street, Chelsea, London SW3, England, near Albert Bridge. It is the church for a parish in the Diocese of London, part of the Church of England. Inside, there is seating for 400 people. There is a memorial plaque to the author Henry James (1843–1916) who lived nearby on Cheyne Walk. To the west of the church is a small public garden containing a sculpture by Jacob Epstein.HistoryChelsea Old Church dates from 1157. Formerly it was the parish church of Chelsea when it was a village, before it was engulfed by London. The building originally consisted of a 13th-century chancel with chapels to the north and south (c.1325) and a nave and tower built in 1670.The chapels were private property. The one to the north was called the Lawrence Chapel and was owned by Chelsea's Lord of the Manor. The chapel to the south was rebuilt in 1528 as Sir Thomas More's private chapel. The date can be found on one of the capitals of the pillars leading to the chancel, which were reputedly designed by Holbein. There is a statue by Leslie Cubitt Bevis of More outside the church, facing the river. There is a 1669 memorial to Lady Jane Cheyne. It was designed by the son of Gian Lorenzo Bernini and executed by Gian Lorenzo's favourite sculptor Antonio Raggi.

Beautiful Anglican Church also known as the All Saints churchfully restored after 1941 WW2 devastating bombing and reopened 1950. Amazing historic architecture, definitely a must see!
Located in Old Church road in Chelsea Embankment. This Church used to be the Parish Church of the Chelsea Village before it was part of London. The building, as it stood before the war, consisted of the Chancel, dating probably from the 13th century, with Chapels on the North and South about 1325, and the Nave and Tower 1670. The cupola was removed in 1815, but the weather vane remains. Both Chapels were private property, that on the North, now known as the Lawrence Chapel, belonging to the Lord of the Manor of Chelsea. The present arch leading from the Chancel is a reproduction of the original 14th century one, which collapsed in 1784 and was only partly restored. #Chelsea #Chelsea_Old_Church
The 1958 rebuild on original footprint with a small garden surround and exterior that's, well.. notably unremarkable Here it's all about the reconstructed historic interior. A meticulous and painstaking restoration of the original salvaged tombs, memorials and remnant fabric including some C16 stained glass panels. Quite remarkable but perhaps of more interest to ecclesiastical enthusiasts. The Hans Sloane memorial in the backyard featuring entwined Pythons and a colossal egg merits a peek. An active community here.
Sadly closed when I visited. A well kept church frequented by St Thomas More on the Thames. A return visit is in order.
One can admire the Protestant’s who died for their beliefs even if one disagrees with them.
Very interesting church with loads of history....a Thomas More statue stands outside. Lots of medieval original features... and lots of more recent history, for example it was virtually destroyed during the blitz. Lovely location, opposite the Thames, near Albert bridge. Well worth a visit...free entry.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
This church is built on land once owned by St Thomas More, there is a statue of him outside. There is a very small rather dark chapel in which More's wife is buried.
Slightly weird place in that it's small, weighed down with much history. The garden was an attractive place to sit in for a quiet hour. The staff were 5 star, very welcoming, and the choral group I heard were even more stars, lifting the worship at the service
Now walked past many times - but not yet been inside. Fascinating history...
Such a lovely church and the family service with Max, the vicar, at 10am on Sundays is a lovely way to start the day.
