David Bowie, the legendary musician and cultural icon, spent part of his childhood in Brixton, a neighborhood in South London, England. The house where Bowie grew up is located at 40 Stansfield Road, Brixton. During his formative years, Bowie, then known as David Robert Jones, lived in this modest terraced house with his family. Although he spent only a portion of his childhood there, the house holds significance as a place where Bowie began to explore his artistic talents and develop his passion for music. Today, the house on Stansfield Road serves as a poignant reminder of Bowie's early years and his enduring influence on music, art, and culture. While it is not open to the public, fans of Bowie often visit the neighborhood to pay homage to the place where the iconic artist spent his formative years.
What many reviewers need to know is that Blue Plaques are not issued until at least 20 years after a person’s death.
Quite an ordinary road but with an unordinary piece of history. David Bowie, one of South London's biggest rock icons was born here and whilst walking past and taking a few snaps, a strange sensation of knowing the young Bowie who was born here, would go on to change the world of music and creativity. Unfortunately there isn't a plaque on the house to commemorate Bowie's birth here...
No plaque or anything, just an empty house on a random street in a dodgy area. He was a great man.
Unfortunately an empty house with no visible connection to David Bowie. But still nice to have been at a historical place.
Bowie was a great artist/performer. So, three stars for music/cultural significance. But why there's no plaque here is pretty strange.
40 Stansfield Road. David Bowie’s childhood home. It is totally abandoned, pity!
D Bowie inspired a whole generation and it still does, despite his later works ways ways too commercial, and the terrible drowing -sure he deserves a lot better-. It is not an exaggeration to say that he we'll always be alive in our hearts..
So sad I missed this place though I stayed just a house away for a whole 9 days! Never knew it was a house away till I left. I passed by several times. Well till next summer. So long!
Stayed in an Airbnb nearby neighborhood was decent Wouldn't feel comfortable going out at night alone However you never would have known you had neighbors.
