Story

St Cuthbert's, Philbeach Gardens is a Grade I listed Anglican church at 50 Philbeach Gardens, Earls Court, London SW5.The Church was built 1884–87, designed by the architect Hugh Roumieu Gough, son of Alexander Dick Gough. The interior furnishings designed by William Bainbridge Reynolds who was a member of the congregation. It has been hailed as Jewel of the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. The church is situated on the north west of Philbeach Gardens in Earls Court near the West Cromwell Road . Adjoining the church is the clergy house and to that Philbeach Hall.St Cuthberts is noted for its interior decoration and its style of worship.HistorySt. Cuthbert's is much the grandest church to have been built in western Kensington. It was built from 1884 to 1887 and was greatly enriched and beautified over the succeeding thirty years. A clergy house attached to the north-west corner of the church was incorporated into Gough's scheme and was the first element to be built. It was undertaken in the latter half of 1883 for a contract price of £1,622 by S. Belham and Company of Buckingham Palace Road, who were to be the builders for the church as well. The church itself followed on from the spring of 1884, slowly at first due to lack of funds. Belhams took up the first contract for £2,937 and the foundation stone, a block quarried at Lindisfarne, was laid by Earl Beauchamp on 2 July 1884. Not long afterwards work had to be stopped while Westall appealed for a further £4,000. Tenders for the second contract were not submitted until May 1886, when Belhams resumed their work for a price of £7,836. In July 1887 the structure was being roofed in. The consecration by Bishop Temple finally took place on 18 November 1887 but the Lady Chapel was apparently not finished until the following year. As completed, the church seated about 950; the cost of its construction was estimated roundly at £11,000.

The most extraordinary and historical hidden gem of a church, in Earls Court. A magnificent building, full of history, traditional high church services, sublime music and a choir that is a spiritual balm for the soul. Friendly and eclectic congregation - all visitors, be them regulars or those visiting are made very welcome. Super opportunity to mingle afterward service and enjoy refreshments with the congregation also to meet Father Paul and Father James. The church also provides an invaluable resource for Earls Court, with lots of support activities. Music concerts, film conventions and other community events take place throughout the year too.
Beautiful church. The interior is really nice, full of character. The most impressive thing is the acoustics. We watched acapella concert here and the sound was perfect. No need for microphones.
What a beautiful little Church. Definitely worth a visit if you are nearby.
An amazing setting full of genuine antiques and sincere dealers.
Everything was beautiful... The homilies are as gritty and down to earth as the building is elaborate, gilded, lovely. I have been to high Mass and the music is extraordinary. I have also been touched by the friendly welcome and very sweet priest.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo wait
Gorgeous building with great art and furnishing
Beautiful church and very special Sunday service.
A lovely big building with quite a delightful interior, it's the type of place you really need to take a look at and see for yourselves. Huge columns inside and great vantage points, they also host local and charitable functions from their church and their community hall, a lovely hall, also that has some great glass paned windows. Impressive in design generally but not intimidating, and quite welcoming. A nice place. Located at Philbeach Gardens.
I recently held my daughter’s first birthday party here and the hall itself is very beautiful and pleasant. They require a £250 deposit to secure a date and then its £70 an hour for the hire. I initially booked the venue for 5 hours 3pm to 8pm for a Saturday afternoon/evening. I had paid the deposit well in advance, as i wanted to secure the date. £250 is allot of money and when one pays this amount they are serious about hiring! The day before the event i called the venue and wanted to confirm that i was going to pay for the 5 hours hire, to which the staff member replied that they had cancelled the event as i did not pay them earlier and claimed that they tried to contact me and i avoided them. Having invited approximately 100 people to the event already, i was completely in shock and worry about the venue cancelling the event. I completely understand that they had a system where they require all payments in full before the actual event, having paid the deposit of £250, and making the payment a day before for the hourly rate, i was doing exactly that. The manager told me that he had cancelled the care taker and another member of staff who were due to come in on the day of the event. In all honesty i had to beg and cry to the operations manager to allow me to carry on with the event! After begging and literally crying over the phone the staff member eventually decided to show me some mercy and make small efforts to get the event back on. He called me back after 6 minutes and told me that he had found someone that could be available to work on the day. However i had to start the event from 2pm and finish at 7pm now. I had no option but to agree, and in result this too also put me in a bad position, as i now had to notify all my guests for the time change. The event eventually happened, but during the whole event the caretaker kept popping up and reminding me about the time and how everything needs to be finished by 7pm. It was a constant nuisance and i just dealt with it throughout the entire event. To sum up everything, the staff did not hesitate to really show lack of compassion, understanding, support or even decency to give comfort to a father who just wanted to celebrate his daughter’s birthday at their venue. I had to beg them. They made me feel quite low and scared, and if i had not shown this emotion, they would have definitely cancelled! This venue needs new staff that have some decent customer service skills and compassion towards people. I didn’t take my deposit back and let the staff keep it, as tbh, I didn’t want the caretaker to screw me over in the actual event! Do not hold personal events here! Staff are average!
Lovely church, lovely people.
