St Columba's Church Of Scotland

Story

St Columba's Church is one of the two London congregations of the Church of Scotland. The church building, designed by Sir Edward Maufe, is located in Pont Street, Knightsbridge, near Harrod's department store. It was given Grade II listing by English Heritage in 1988.HistoryThe presence of Scottish Presbyterianism in London dates back to the Union of the Crowns in 1603. A congregation was established near what is now Trafalgar Square, with a permanent church later being built in Crown Court near Covent Garden. This church is still in use, although rebuilt. The growth in the Scottish community in London resulted in the need for a larger church than Crown Court Church alone could accommodate. The original St Columba's Church building of 1884 was destroyed by wartime bombing during the night of 10 May 1941. It was rebuilt on the same site in 1955 to a striking contemporary design by the architect Sir Edward Maufe, who also designed Guildford Cathedral. The church is named after Saint Columba, the famous saint from Ulster.

Happened to be walking in the area & came across this church. Beautiful externally & quite plain internally. The organ was being played when I visited which was beautiful. A lovely quiet space to recharge your batteries & pray or just contemplate. Well worth a visit.
The church itself is beautiful, the care taker is very warm. He certainly showed his Christian love towards us. HoweverI had a very different experience from the ministers which made me wonder and doubt if they are true Christians and an element of unconscious bias,I.e. racism
What a wonderful Easter Sunday with my boys. Loved each single bit of it: music, prayers, organisation, Easter tea and coffe and the Easter Lunch. Was felt very welcome even if I am at the Church for the first time on Easter. Thankful to Hillhouse school for lovely introduction, as this is the Church where children from this school having an assembly.
Beautiful church used for St Andrew alumni carol concert. Great space for hosting large scale events and drinks receptions under the hall.
One of two Church of Scotland churches in London. Always a warm welcome and a good church service Presbyterian. There are excellent value lunches on some Sundays; check the website for details. During the summer months there are concerts 1:30pm start featuring outstanding soloists, on a regular basis. Again, check the website for details.
It's good to see a large Church of Scotland in the middle of London with a Scottish minister.
Lovely church. So welcoming and the choir was amazing. A lot of good work goes on here.
This is a Church of Scotland. I volunteer for a homeless Charity. We make use of the Church Hall for the drop-in and to serve food to guests who visit from all over London every Friday evenings. Lovely place, lovely staff, lovely guests and volunteers....
A modest but grand looking building. This church originally built in the 1800s was bombed during WW2 and rebuilt. I was surprised at the height of the ceiling, I would imagine some gorgeous hymns and prayers have echoed around this church
They do a food drive every Friday for the homeless and also have a charity organization that aims to raise money for the homeless small charity but they are making wonderful efforts in there surroundings. Please donate
