There is very little flavour in the food. We had two starters - chicken drumsticks and Mach bhaja - both of which were quite cold and bland. For the mains we had the lamb and chicken biryani with a side of daal. The biryani was fair even though the chunk of potato served with it was hard and the egg cold. The daal was okay but not flavoursome. The drinks were ok - not served cold and we had to chase for water. I was hoping the ‘Limca’ would be served in the bottle but got it served in a glass instead. The service is very lackadaisical - both waitresses were playing on their phones. The restaurant itself is quite cramped and other customers ended up dropping crockery or knocking tables on their way out. Sadly, we won’t be visiting again.
The food is very unique, not like any other indian I've had before. The decor is is very trendy, pleasant music and the restaurant gives an excellent vibe. Service is simply sensational, staff were very helpful and prompt, food got brought our in a very well presented manner. Oh and did I mention the masala thumbs up? Try it :
From booking to paying the bill, Calcutta Street was superb. Quick and easy bookings open to amendments, polite friendly host. I tried both lunch and dinner menu and I strongly recommend this little pearl to anyone who, like myself, loves authentic Indian cuisine.
Proper authentic Bengali food, not the rubbish you get in Indian restaurants. The spices are there for flavour, not to burn your tongue.
A bit about myself, I live to eat food, eat anything and everything right from street food in India to fine dining in London. I only post a review when I am very dissatisfied with the price and quality of the food. I came to "Calcutta Street" because my partner who is from Calcutta was very excited to try out this restaurant which claims to have been inspired by Calcutta food. Since I am not one to mince words all I can say the whole experience was a very big disappointment. Its way over priced for the portion size. Here is the bill showing what we ate. Apart from the Prawn Malai Karai 16£ for 3 small prawn pieces along with its shells and rice items  everything else was bland. I was looking forward to the lamb biryani, which is one of the most popular dish on any foodies list when in Kolkata, but was treated to a rice and burnt lamb combo that I returned complaining about it. Got it back from the  kitchen and was told it was supposed to taste that way. Got confirmation that the food was just reheated aka microwaved. I don't expect biryani to be cooked fresh in a restaurant but being served black pieces of lamb that were obviously overcooked and burnt and costing a whopping 12£ just put me off completely. The Kosha Mangsho was filled with bone pieces lacking meat and it lacked flavor. I am not one to waste food no matter how bad it is as long as it's edible that would be one way to describe our dinner so I did finish it with a bad after taste.
Loved the food, reminds me of home made food. I tried the veg tiffin, it was awesome. Visited many times. Would love if the service can be fast, as we went for team lunch and it takes a lot of time to get the food.
Fabulous Bengali food, quick service and a bubbly host who makes sure you have a great food experience. Definitely check this place out!
One of a kind restaurant. Amazing cocktails and food that probably my grandmother would cook in South Calcutta. Must visit on your next trip to London.
Good menu, cozy space and good intentions. However, management have disappeared and the wheels are coming off in this restaurant. The food was tasty and interesting. Of course many dishes are re-heated! The problem is that some are not well reheated. The service was lousy. Good people but inexperienced at the job and abandoned by management who has not given any guidance about what to do if you are waiter in a restaurant. The space has had minimal maintenance since it was opened, particularly downstairs. Not recommended.
We really enjoyed the food and experience here, but the restaurant was very quiet as it was just before Xmas and I suspect if it is busier the service may not be as good and the tables would be too crowded. The food was really excellent - we had a range of starters including fried aubergine fritters, followed by lamb biryani and crab which was hugely messy to eat but really good. We would have benefitted from more appropriate implements and a finger bowl for the crab, and our plates were vintage and varying in size and appropriateness for eating off. It’s not a fine dining experience in any way, shape or form, but I’d recommend this place for a surprisingly tasty and really fun meal. Service was charming.
