About

Serving up authentic kati rolls just like from the streets of Kolkata

Story

What started out as one woman’s nostalgia for her favorite hometown eats soon turned into one of New York’s most popular eateries. The Kati Roll Company started in 2000 in New York’s Greenwich Village and now has five locations in Manhattan, as well as one across the pond in London, England.

TKRC is the brainchild of female entrepreneur, Payal Saha, originally from Kolkata, India. She started the business with a very simple concept, “I tremendously missed Kati Rolls, and there weren’t any in New York when I first moved here,” she remembers, “I just wanted to have a place where I could enjoy Kolkata’s street foods. I thought if I missed it so much, other people must too.”

With its warm paratha’s (or alternate whole wheat roti) wrapped around various spice laden fillings, the aromatic rolls have turned many hungry folks into bonafide TKRC devotees, some traveling across state lines to satisfy their kati roll fix.

Veg or non-veg, South Asian or not, the one thing that TKRC fans have in common is their desire for fresh and easy food, so much so that they are willing to wait in sometimes long lines for the soul-satisfying fare. But don’t take our word for it, Google The Kati Roll Company and see for yourselves. Or better yet, stop in and get your kati roll on. Trust us, you’ll be back.

Tried the chicken unda and shami kebab rolls here, but was disappointed. The chicken unda roll lacked the freshness of a freshly cooked egg, though the chicken and pink onions were flavorful. The shami kebab roll was very dry and crumbly, despite having a nice flavor. The rolls needed more sauce or moisture in the ingredients maybe a bit of fresh salad. The waiters were attentive and provided good service however the food was not. Since I arrived late, we had to eat outside. Good flavors, but it could be better.
We love this place and have been popping in when we pass since it opened. My current favourite is the aloo masala rolls. The potato melts in your mouth and the flavour is outstanding. Not too hot and the mango lassi is the perfect accompaniment. This is the place to go if you fancy a smaller Indian meal and the old movie art on the walls is perfect.
Having tried this a few years back in New York where the staff there mentioned there's branches in London too, I've had this on my to-do list. Sadly it did not live up to my fond memory of the New York one. I tried a chicken unda roll as well as a shami kebab roll. The chicken unda roll didn't taste like the egg was freshly cooked onto it - I suspect either they made them in advance or it was cooked for too long - this really makes a difference between it being fine and amazing. The chicken itself has a nice enough flavour, and the pink onions add nice contrast. The shami kebab roll was very dry, to the point that the 'croquette' was basically crumbly dry minced meat. The flavour was nice, but it needed more moisture. One huge gripe I have - charging 50p for a tiny pot of sauce on top of the already quite high price is a bit of a p*** take in my opinion - they should offer one free pot with each roll given how dry they are or at least sauce up the contents of the Kati rolls a bit more. All in all, there are good flavours here, but it's not quite as good as it could be.
Fresh, tasty and super cheap quick service option. My aloo paratha was only £5 with a dip. It was busy on a Sunday but I didn't have to wait longer than 5 minutes for my food. The wrap is pretty compact and a little greasy but overall the potato was soft and flavourful. Vegetarian options: I believe the roti is vegan so can have a roti wrap instead of the paratha for Vegans. Lots of vegetarian options.
Delicious Kati rolls with a good variety of fillings to choose from. Called frankies in Mumbai and famous in Bengal, basicly a roti wrap with a delicious filling. These are available all over India. This place sells good Kati rolls with authentic taste. Cheap enough for a quick bite whilst in Soho and tasty enough to want to return for more. We had the king prawn one, delicious! Vegetarian options: There are good vegetarian options.
I had chicken rice bowl yesterday. The quantity was very good for this amount and it tasted good. The atmosphere is not so good, it is like an indian dhaba and the seating quality is not very nice but all the food is cheap so it makes up for it. Sometimes the restaurant is very crowded but it wasn’t yesterday so I was able to enjoy my food. The staff was very nice and friendly.
Great atmosphere, fantastic food, superb value and friendly staff. The staff were welcoming, helpful and friendly. The rolls came within 5 minutes, which i was very impressed by I ordered the paneer and chicken tikka rolls. The paneer's marinade was an explosion of flavour in my mouth and was divine, plus the added texture of the vegetables reslly made the dish. Whilst the chicken was cooked to absolute perfection, it was tender, succulent and packed full of a combination of Indian flavours that packed a punch and had real depth in flavour.
The Kati rolls were amazing and so was the service which made the experience wonderful! The staff is very friendly and understanding. Special mention to Sneha and Kavita who helped us out with making the perfect choices and gave us a student discount! Really appreciate the service and the kind staff. The Kati rolls both veg and non veg were delicious with the protein being super soft with the perfect amount of sauces and spices. Do try the mango lassi as well!
A lovely place to go to for those feeling nostalgic about streetside kati rolls in Kolkata. Both veg and non-veg options are available, and Kadak Chai to go with your choice of roll. Could be a bit less oily though! The interior is decorated with posters of old Bollywood movies, that adds character to the small but neat shop.Food: 4/5
I can't say enough good things about Kathi Roll Company and their scrumptious chicken tikka kathi roll! Every visit is a treat, and their authentic flavors never disappoint. The chicken tikka is perfectly spiced and cooked to perfection, wrapped in a soft, warm paratha that is simply irresistible. The balance of flavors and the freshness of the ingredients make each bite a delightful experience. Whether it's a quick lunch or a satisfying dinner, Kathi Roll Company is my go-to spot for a delicious and satisfying meal. Highly recommended for anyone craving an authentic and flavorful kathi roll!
