Britannia Adelphi Hotel

Story

The Britannia Adelphi Hotel is in Ranelagh Place, Liverpool city centre, Merseyside, England. The present building is the third hotel on the site, and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. The building is owned and managed by Britannia Hotels. It contains 402 en-suite bedrooms, conference and dining facilities, and a gymnasium. After a series of low food hygiene inspection ratings, Britannia Hotels pleaded guilty in June 2017 to charges relating to food hygiene, and were fined more than £200,000.HistoryThe first hotel on the site was built in 1826 for the hotelier James Radley by the conversion of two 18th Century town houses. It was built on the site of the former Ranelagh Gardens, the first open space for public recreation in Liverpool. This hotel was replaced by another hotel in 1876, which was bought in 1892 by the Midland Railway, being renamed the Midland Adelphi. A feature was a basement set of heated tanks to keep live turtles for turtle soup which was not only served, but the basis of a significant business being sent to banquets etc. around the country and beyond. The railway company replaced it between 1911 and 1914 with the present building, designed by Frank Atkinson. When opened, it was "regarded as the most luxurious hotel outside London".Due to Liverpool being a major arrival and departure point for ocean liners during the early 20th century, the Adelphi served as the most popular hotel in the city for wealthy passengers before they embarked on their journey to North America. The RMS Titanic was registered in Liverpool (though it never visited the port), and the Sefton Suite is said to be an exact replica of the ill-fated liner's First Class Smoking Lounge. However, it is unclear why this claim is made as the room bears no resemblance to Titanic's First Class Smoking Room or the First Class Lounge.

So much better than we thought, a beautiful building steeped with history. Food a bit monotonous, meat and same veg, cooked breakfast, toast and cereal. Rooms were not cleaned during our stay, our room had been updated. I would not hesitate staying there again as such a brilliant location. The lobby man was brilliant for a chat. Loved Liverpool as a destination, so much to do and see. People are really lovely.
This hotel is situated close to the heart of the city centre with every type of amenities within close walking distance. The staff were polite and efficient. Service was of a good level. Room felt a little bit dated, but due to the reasonable price paid was balanced out, and it didn't detract from the stay. Definitely worth the stay and there was a very good selection for breakfast in the morning. Nearby activities: Based in the city centre with most attractions within walking distance. Walkability: Next door to Liverpool Lime Street station and a 10 minute walk from main bus station.
Wow. Looks are deceiving. From the outside it looks like a great place to spend the night, until you walk through the doors. Stains all over every surface in the bathrooms. Floors so gross you wish you brought slippers. Grey water out of the shower. Uncomfortable beds. It’s like this place was built in the 80’s and hasn’t been touched since. No wonde It was so cheap. A hostel would have been a better experience. Do not stay here
Such amazing Victorian architecture. Some rooms are a little tried and missing the fine details but the prices are budget and good for what you get. The staff have all been great and very helpful. But the tramps and drunks sitting on the front steps would put anyone off.
Excellent location and the hotel itself is very Shining-esque... but the rooms are particularly dated and definitely need a revamp. The cooked breakfast wasn't great for non-meat eaters. It was weird that people could just walk in from the streets and wander around the ENTIRE hotel, but we didn't experience any bother during our 2 night stay.
A beautiful old building with some amazing architectural features. A pity it is looking a little tired in places, but still has some gorgeous art deco features. The breakfast was lovely, food was tasty and fresh with great service. The room was very clean, if a little tired and a very comfortable bed. Reception staff were very welcoming and friendly. Thank you Hamza. We would definitely return. Rooms: Clean and a decent size if little tired. Nearby activities: Plenty of pubs, restaurants and shops just a stones throw away Walkability: Museums, shops and pubs less than 5 minutes walk. Food & drinks: Breakfast was lovely. The American bar had plenty of choice at average prices.
Faded grandeur of main reception area, bar, and many of the hotels rooms lets down what could be an amazing hotel. The impression is that the focus and love seems to be on the functions side of the business. The reception desk entrance hall and American bar area at the front of the hotel are functional but tired. Staff are professional and efficient on the whole and reception staff we encountered were polite if a bit serious. Some of the function areas further into the building are stunning and show the amazing potential of the hotel to make the most of its Edwardian opulence. The hotels' priorities are obviously on the weddings and functions side of the business and from what we saw this is where all the TLC seems to be going. Making your way along wide dimly lit Edwardian corridors that could definitely do with some love and attention is slightly dispiriting. You can just feel what the potential of these spaces could be. Our room on the fourth floor was large, clean and tidy but very tired and in need of sympathetic updating. It obviously has had minimal money spent on it for years. Looking at the pictures of bridal suite rooms you can see what's possible for rooms in the hotel but our room looked like it had been forgotten about for years. It could be so much nicer. You have to have the windows open to stay cool as there's no aircon and because of this you get very loud music drifting up from the Irish pub near the front of the hotel every night we were there - Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. This made it difficult to get to sleep and I was also woken up every night by people screaming and/or shouting on the street below in the early hours. Despite this the bed was comfortable and the bed linen was good quality and clean. The Bathroom was clean but tired with secondary double glazing, one panel of which was jammed open at a jaunty angle. Nevertheless the bathroom was functional, although the showerhead could only be angled so far because of how it was mounted. The location is incredibly convenient right in the centre minutes from the station and only about 25 minutes from the ACC and exhibition centre and all the waterfront locations. Great location, great building so much more potential on the hotel side of the business. This could be so much better and I wish it was, I really do. I would love to be able to recommend it but I just can't. Sorry. Maybe if things improve in the future.
There was a television documentary on this place 30 or 40 years ago, well it’s nothing like it was back then. There is a homeless fella outside, I can’t knock him because I’ve been homeless in the past, maybe not nice to see but just him a little respect if nothing else. So rooms are nice with bathroom and en-suite. Could probably do with a makeover, though it is clean the place is aged. I will probably eat out only because from what I can make out is that they don’t do room service and I don’t like eating in a room of around 100 people. I will recommend but probably wouldn’t return again myself
STAY AWAY! We booked a Taylor Swift themed tea here and left without having anything except for tea. It started off with us wandering around trying to locate where the tea was held. We found two tables set up and decided to sit there-- no staff in sight. We then found someone and they told us someone would come to help us. Finally someone did and brought us tea. We reminded them of previous communications on allergies and she alluded to knowing this. However, then they brought out strawberry milkshakes which was a consistency of milk and 3 out of 4 couldn't drink because of allergies. The fourth adult tasted it and decided not to drink because it was milk. Apparently they don't offer alternatives because then she brought out a kids fruit juice for the three adults. At this point, we were done. We'd been there for 45 min and food hadn't been brought out. They clearly weren't prepared for food restrictions despite saying in previous emails they were. We decided to leave. We filed a complaint and asked for a refund and they only gave us 50% of it. We didn't even consume half of the set menu. At least charge us for the tea and give us back the rest. Very rude and unprofessional to still charge someone for something that was not delivered as promised. The hotel is dated and dirty. The service is even worse. And management is not helpful or reasonable. At any other regarded hotel, none of this would have happened. Book another place!
This hotel is a grand old lady that you can really imagine was spectacular in her hey day! The hotel now could do with a freshen up and cosmetic work but I had no issue with my stay here. I was on the 6th floor, my room was fine, decent size, very comfy bed and pillows. Tea and coffee facilities in the room, mini toiletries and iron and ironing board. The bathroom was spotless. Water pressure in the shower was crap but a minor issue. Wave bar in the basement is very cheap. Good location from local bars and nightlife and a stones throw from Lime St station. I've stayed all over the world, from 5 star luxury to youth hostels and I would absolutely recommend this hotel for a cheap clean stay. I didn't eat the food there so can't comment on that.
