"The elegant, golden-topped neo-classical tower on Lansdown Hill was built by Henry Goodridge in 1827 as a retreat for the eccentric writer, collector and slave owner William Beckford. Born to immense wealth and endowed with precocious talent Beckford created magnificent buildings in which to store his extraordinary art, furniture and book collections. Today the tower houses a museum dedicated to Beckford. The magnificent spiral staircase sweeps up to the Belvedere with its ornately gilded lantern affording breath-taking views over Bath and the surrounding countryside. At the foot of the tower is the Victorian cemetery, once part of Beckford’s pleasure garden, where both he and Goodridge lie buried."

I have been wanting to visit for a while and finally got round to it. I'm glad I got to visit and have a look around and go up the tower. I had a nice chat to the friendly member of staff who was working on my visit she seems really knowledgeable of the building and its history. We had a talk about other parts of Bath which was nice to pass on stuff I know about other local places. The museum is really interesting with lots of information and things to look at. Going up the tower was fun but a long way up but once you're at the top the views are amazing although on my visit it was hazy out so limited how far you could see but still great views. It's really worth a visit. There is no step free access to the tower or museum. The cemetery is worth a walk around there is Beckford's grave here aswell.
Beautiful place on Lansdown overlooking Bath. Great view from cemetery nearby too. The receptionist knew her stuff and it was very informative.
The actual building and tower was closed when we got there but you can still walk through the cemetery and get a very good view of Bath. There are also some good hiking trails bebind the back wall of the cemetery.Visited onWeekend

Most unusual tower. Great verbal history from Emily. The story of the man as interesting as the tower itself. The overgrown cemetery most unusual, too
Fascinating folly built for one man to sit, think and look at the view. 166 steps and he was 66 when it was built so must have had good knees. With an old graveyard at it's foot the tower is a really great place to visit and explore. The guides are lovely and knowledgeable and the mini exhibit is interesting. A fortune built on sugar and slavery, a sexual scandal and the grand tour - what's not to like?
Beckford was the 'richest commoner in England', and his story is fascinating. This was his favourite spot - a beautiful staircase up to a beautiful view. Be sure to check opening times - there aren't many!
If you’re in the area I highly recommend taking the walk from the Primrose Woodlands to here, as the contrast between pastoral hills on one side and the Gothic tower and cemetery on the other is quite interesting. The views from inside the tower aren’t as good as from outside and I found the tower itself more interesting left to my imagination, but at least the 5 pound admission fee helps them keep the tower and grounds maintained.
Not much to see, very limited opening times and facilities
A lovely atmospheric place to walk about with incredible views to the south.
