Australian High Commission

Story

The High Commission of Australia in London is the diplomatic mission of Australia in the United Kingdom. It is located in Australia House, a Grade II listed building. It is both Australia's first diplomatic mission and the longest continuously occupied diplomatic mission in the United Kingdom.HistoryA major landmark on Strand, London, construction on the building by the Dove Brothers commenced in 1913, but shipping problems caused by World War I delayed completion. It was officially opened by King George V in a ceremony on 3 August 1918 attended by the Australian Prime Minister William Morris Hughes. The cost of the triangular shaped land was £379,756 when purchased by the Commonwealth of Australia in 1912 and building and other associated costs brought total expenditure to about £1 million. The building was designed by Scottish architects, Alexander Marshall Mackenzie and his son, Alexander George Robertson Mackenzie following an architectural competition, the judges of which included Bertram Mackennal, John Longstaff, George Washington Lambert, Fred Leist and Arthur Streeton. The Commonwealth of Australia's chief architect, John Smith Murdoch, travelled to London to work with the Mackenzie firm on the building.

The staff at the Australia Centre are very friendly, helpful and go above and beyond. As an Aussie living in London, it's lovely to walk into a little piece of home!
I had an urgent question about traveling on my current passport while my new passport was being processed. My email was replied to within a few hours, and I also called in the meantime. Brooke, who was also Australian, was extremely helpful, friendly and diligent. I can now travel with peace of mind that I'll be able to get back into the UK.
What an amazing place, especially built using Australian materials. An impressive building in a great location.
I had to wait nearly a month for my appointment. The guy who served me was very professional and helpful. The cost to verify 3 documents is £120 which is not cheap. The High commission is very easy to find if you are near Waterloo station.
Fantastic service and support! Even over public holiday was assisted with 24 hour phone line. Given a next day appointment and had an emergency passport in my hands within 48 hours! All staff either in person or on phone were helpful and understanding and couldn’t have been nicer. So lovely to know that when you need help, support and advice even halfway around the world that they will assist and get you back home or any issues sorted out. Cannot thank them enough nor recommend reaching out to them in times of need!
Visited today to apply for a new passport, as mine had expired. Was seen by a very nice gentleman, called Chris. Appointment time was dead on time. My photo’s were not up to standard but instead of rejecting the application, resulting in another 4.5 hour round trip, Chris directed me to the nearest photo shop. This was just a 10 min walk away. I took them back to the embassy and now just need to wait for my passport. All in all a very positive experience-thank you! UPDATE : Was told processing time was 6 weeks but received and email, almost 3 weeks later, to say it was on its way
Brooke helped me through the overseas emergency+ordinary passport so efficiently and swiftly. Everyone has been so kind and helpful that it made me miss home.
Security was unbelievably helpful and genuinely nice people to me when I lost my bag. They recovered it and went over and beyond to return it to me. Forever grateful
Booking is required. If you are going for a passport meeting, leave yourself a little bit of time to get through security. Also please be aware there are no toilet facilities available to the public.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Atrocious service. It’s seems the staff are really disinterested in doing their jobs and are just enjoying a nice holiday at the Australian taxpayers expense. Utterly impossible to get anyone to answer the phone and no one ever calls back after leaving a message. They also refuse to see anyone without an appointment and just fob you off to the online website. Public servants are there to serve the public, not themselves. Quite a good example of the attitude of the lazy clowns in the Australian government
