Wyndham's Theatre

Story

Wyndham's Theatre is a West End theatre, one of two opened by the actor/manager Charles Wyndham (the other is the Criterion Theatre). Located on Charing Cross Road in the City of Westminster, it was designed c.1898 by W.G.R. Sprague, the architect of six other London theatres between then and 1916. It was designed to seat 759 patrons on three levels although later refurbishment increased this to four. The theatre was Grade II* listed by English Heritage in September 1960.HistoryWyndham had always dreamed of building a theatre of his own and through the admiration of a patron and the financial confidence of friends, he was able to realise his dream when Wyndham's Theatre opened on 16 November 1899, in the presence of the Prince of Wales. The first play performed there was a revival of T. W. Robertson's David Garrick. In 1910, Gerald du Maurier began an association with the theatre which lasted 15 years and to include the stage debut of the screen actress Tallulah Bankhead. Du Maurier's small daughter, Daphne, often watched her father's performance from the wings. Thirty years later she presented her own play, The Years Between, on the same stage.

Such a gorgeous theatre on the inside; I could just sit in this room for hours… if the seats were more comfortable. Anyone over 5’8” will feel a bit tight when it comes to legroom. But for tickets under £25, it’s still worth going!
Fabulous theatre. The downside is that you have to standup to let people get past to their seat in your row. Whilst this is common, the space is slightly less than I would like it to be but its typical of its time when people were slimmer and/or smaller than today. I'm not going to downgrade it because of this restricted space.
Really lovely intimate theatre. Can sit anywhere and be fine. Sound is also great here. Right next to Leicester square tube station. Stage door round back
Comfy seats just not much leg room, plenty of toilets so I would recommend skipping the huge queue when you walk in and heading to some of the others! Went here to see Next to Normal which was phenomenal
An excellent show but also a brilliant theatre. It retains the personal feeling while still accommodating a fair amount of people - also beautifully designed.
A beautiful and very intimate setting. Great view from all seats which is unusual for most theatres in the West End.
It is just a couple of steps away from Leicester Square tube station. The seats in the stalls are quite roomy and well placed so even although we were in the back row, we could see the play really well. Brilliant play, brilliant cast and brilliant set. Nice bar, and also loads of places very close by for eating and drinking. What more could you want?
Lovely theater, the staff were so helpful and friendly! I got wheelchair accessible seats in a box in the back which is accessed through a door on the front road and a stairlift down 3 steps. It has a private toilet and is very spacious and nice. Although it has a restricted view of the top of the set, the show I saw Next to Normal was still amazing and absolutely worth seeing from those seats. Definitely go to the stage door afterwards as well as the actors come out to say hi!
Clean and beautiful, but the toilets are too narrow, with only two downstairs and four upstairs, which is very insufficient. Many people still couldn’t make it to the restroom by the time the performance started. Sometimes the toilets don’t flush properly.
Lovely theatre really well kept but the security guard was quite rude and seems to be on a power trip telling me that I couldn’t bring my leftover food from my dinner inside even though it was closed in a package, I asked for the manager who turned out to be really polite and reassuring and let me put my stuff in the cloakroom for after the theatre.
