Wong Kei Restaurant

Story

Wong Kei is a Chinese restaurant in London's Chinatown, once described as "the rudest restaurant in London". It was one of the largest Chinese restaurants in the UK with seating for around 500 diners.RestaurantWong Kei was once known for the rudeness of its staff, who would shout "Sit down with them!" or "Go upstairs!" to arriving patrons, insult customers who asked for a knife and fork, and chase those who failed to leave a sufficient tip. This aspect was seen as a positive and enjoyable feature rather than a criticism of the restaurant. After a renovation, the restaurant reopened in 2001 with friendlier waiters, and when it reopened under new management in March 2014, new owner Daniel Luc said: "Maybe there was an issue with rude staff 20 to 30 years ago, but I don't think so any more. I don't know whether that's a good thing or not."BuildingWong Kei is situated at 41–43 Wardour Street, in a building previously owned by Willy Clarkson (1861–1934), a theatrical wig maker and costumier, as attested by the 1966 blue plaque on the façade. The building was designed by the architect H. M. Wakeley in a mixed Baroque and Art Nouveau style; Sarah Bernhardt laid the foundation stone for the building in 1904 and Sir Henry Irving laid the coping stone in 1905. Clarkson's was there from 1905 to 1940.When Terence Dalley sketched the building in 1972, another Chinese restaurant, Lee Ho Fook, occupied the ground floor.

Service was really bad. The waiters are fast and efficient but can’t focus for a second on the customer and give them good energy and some charisma. Just felt very impatient and rushed. Food was ok. The spring rolls were weird and had very little filling. The Wuntun soup was nice. The duck was cold, which is quite normal but would be good to have an option to make it warm because it would’ve been much nicer.
The decoration is like my high school canteen. I guess its a old school decoration style. They served hot tea instead of water, which is also very traditional. The service is quite efficient. I love the beef and egg fried rice Cannot remember the exact name. There are quite a lot of beef in it. The roasted duck is not fatty. Maybe the duck went to gym a lot. Good value for price.
First time back since 2001 when I studied here despite multiple trips back to London. It’s a reliable place for casual late night supper on a cold night post show, but I wouldn’t recommend this place otherwise. There is much better cooking just next door at Gold Mine and many other eateries nearby. Everything we had was disappointing and bland or even tasteless, thankfully there’s lots of their house chilli sauce in a generous glass on the table. Only the aromatic duck was worth the trip. Loved that they offered it in quarter bird portions and I would come back just for this, again, only after a show for supper when other places are closed. That said, the menu is HUGE. So it’s a great place to bring big groups of friends who can’t come to a consensus on what to have. You’ll find something for everyone including vegetarians and those with allergies. But for pure nostalgia, quick hot grub and a spotlessly clean comfortable environment late at night, I feel it’s worth a visit and I’d choose it over many other options. It only gets a 3 star because we just expect better cooking from its reputation.
Good Chinese food in my opinion. Portion is big, and tasty. Staff is not friendly, speaking loud and no smile. Pay only cash!Food: 4/5
For every good thing we experienced, there was something bad. The location is great, but we're packed in like sardines. Prices are cheap, but they only take cash. There is no service charge but the service is bad waiter was rude when dealing with him, slow to take our order and slow to fill our Chinese tea and slow to bring back our change. The Chinese Tea is free but is served in cheap and small metal teapots that get cold fast and the waiters are slow to refill. The beef brisket noodle soup and wan tan noodle soup were very good, but the special fried rice was bad and the Malaysian fried hor fun noodles was horrible and made totally wrong. Overall, I think 2 stars is the best I can give it based my experience eating there on a Tuesday lunchtime.
My absolute favourite Chinese restaurant. Authentic wonderful food, and a really slick operation. Try to visit around 2 pm onwards for lunch and avoid the rush. Staff have a lot more time for you and you're guaranteed a table. I have to mention though that portion size has decreased quite a lot since my visit 5 years ago, plus prices have dramatically increased.
Significant price increased since my last visit and portion decreased too. A small plate of fried noodles costs over £12 in a fast food style set up.Food: 2/5
Don’t expect good service when you’re here, because they are really rude. Food wise - the fried rice & fried vegetables were pretty decent & authentic. But for the wanton soup….. it might be one of the worst things I’ve ate in my life. Roast duck was served cold & was tough.
Basic weekday evening hot meal, apparently has a reputation for rude service. You don’t believe it until you’re experiencing it and just wow especially if you’re dinning alone, it would have been better to maybe just disappear unless you’re brave, like me Visited Dec 2019, Dec 2023
Food was good but service was bad Waiters and waitresses are impatient but they serve really quick. Our food arrived 5 mins after we ordered. Portion was super big. Had to bring home some because it was too much!Food: 5/5
