Story

Westminster Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Westminster and the Mother Church for Roman Catholics in England and Wales.

For over a hundred years countless Christians and visitors of every faith and none have crossed the threshold of this holy place, sensing the presence of God and filling it with prayer and contemplation.

Our Cathedral is a vibrant parish church; a living house of prayer where Holy Mass is offered over forty times every week and Confession is available six hours each day.

This great edifice was opened in 1903 and was consecrated in 1910. Designed by John Francis Bentley, the leading church architect of his day it is inspired by the early Byzantine style.

Since 1930 the Cathedral has been home to the shrine of the English saint and martyr, St John Southworth. This Lancashire priest lived and ministered to the poor in the streets of Westminster. He was martyred in 1654. The presence of his earthly remains in the Cathedral remind us that our ultimate destiny is the Kingdom of Heaven.

Westminster Cathedral is the home of a much-loved, world-famous Choir which sings at the daily Solemn Mass. People from all over the world come here to listen to great music from its remarkable and extensive repertoire.

Westminster Cathedral is usually open from 7.00am-7.00pm every day and welcomes all.

DEDICATION OF THE CATHEDRAL:

With the laying of the foundation stone in June 1895, the Cathedral was dedicated to The Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, to his Blessed Mother, his Foster Father St Joseph and St Peter, his Vicar. There are secondary patrons, also: St Augustine and all British saints, St Patrick and all saints of Ireland. These dedications provide a meditation in themselves and are reflected in features of the Cathedral such as the pelican feeding her young with the blood of her own body (an ancient symbol of Christ selflessly nourishing redeemed humanity), the great crucifix that hangs between the nave and the sanctuary, and the side chapels, many of which honour patron saints.

Dedication of the Cathedral:
The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Precious Blood
To the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord
Jesus Christ
To his Blessed Mother,
His Foster Father Saint Joseph
and St Peter his Vicar
Secondary Patrons:
St Augustine and all British saints
St Patrick and all saints of Ireland

DOMINE JESU REX ET REDEMPTOR PER SANGUINEM TUUM SALVA NOS

(Lord Jesus, King and Redeemer, save us by your blood)

All saints of Britain and Ireland, pray for us

Mission

Westminster Cathedral, a community united in worship around our bishop, aims to be a house of prayer, which represents and realises a Catholic presence in our parish, diocese, city and nation, through the celebration of the sacraments, the preaching of God's Word, the beauty of worship, and ministry to those who come here. A living sign of the Body of Christ in our city -- building charity, unity and peace through Sacrament and Word.

A lovely church that is a Catholic Church, but everyone is welcome no matter what religion you follow. It is also one of the biggest in the UK and is over a 100 years old. I really enjoyed my visit and lit a candle for a friend who is sick even though I'm not a Catholic. It also has beautiful mosaics and marble work. It even has a lovely cafe downstairs with friendly staff.
Went to a Mass here, evening Mass. If you’re Catholic visiting London don’t miss the opportunity to attend a Mass here. The choir is amazing and the whole experience is very different to what a lot of people get in the parish churches. Even if you’re not Catholic or Christian, the building and Mass is worth seeing. Make sure you bring some coins to donate and you can also light a candle for a loved one.
Stunning, but busy. Went early on a weekday at 10.30am and it was hard to see much as too many people crammed in. Definitely still worth a visit. Spent around 3 hours and I don’t think I saw everything.Visited onWeekdayWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedYes
This is the Catholic cathedral close to Victoria - not to be confused with Westminster Abbey near the Houses of Parliament. It's an odd building - as if it's not sure what it is trying to be. That said, the mosaics and beautifully decorated interior makes for a weird, Byzantine experience. Undoubtedly it's beautiful and almost out of keeping with its location. Definitely worth seeing!
Finally a church in London that doesn't charge entrance see Westminster Abbey and St Paul's cathedral. Beautiful place. We stayed for some time in the calmness of this spiritual placeVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
Found this chapel by accident but was amazed at it's beauty. The entrance was free but if you want to go to the top of the tower it will cost £6 per person but you will have a spectacular 360 degree view of London.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A stunning catholic cathedral near Victoria station. Its interior is dark and brooding as you look up to the ceiling, but there is a sense of peace. Eucharist was just beginning to be celebrated and it was held in Latin which was a surprise but lovely to hear. There is a choir who sing services and the program of sung services is available on line. It is free to enter and well worth visiting.
Westminster Cathedral is the largest Roman Catholic church in England and Wales and the seat of the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster. An architectural masterpiece of the 13th to 16th centuries, Westminster Abbey also presents a unique pageant of British history – the shrine of St Edward the Confessor, the tombs of kings and queens, and countless memorials to the famous and the great. The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Most Precious Blood, known as Westminster Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Westminster. All are welcome to come and pray. Westminster Cathedral is at the heart of Catholic faith in London. Holy Mass, central to everything we do, is celebrated throughout the day, seven days a week and the Sacrament of Reconciliation is available daily. Please visit us and experience for yourself the unique beauty and holiness of this celebrated Cathedral.
Westminster Cathedral is impressive and yet it’s often overlooked by visitors. This is the largest Roman Catholic Cathedral in the U.K. The cloisters are beautiful and mass is held daily, or if short on time, light a candle. Several chapels are dedicated to angels and saints. Walk up the stairs or take a lift to the Viewing Gallery for breathtaking views of London. The cathedral is very accessible and it’s free to enter. And the cathedral is just a short walk from Victoria Rail and Underground stations. A
A Catholic Cathedral. Quite a huge one in the city centre in walking distance away from Victoria train station and tube station. Because it is so huge, when there is no mass or service, you can easily find a quiet corner or chapel for private prayer, despite the fact that there are always a lot of visitors. There is one shop inside the church for religious book and things. There is a much bigger shop on the right hand side of the main entrance outside the Cathedral. It’s St Paul’s Catholic Bookstore.
