Story

The Western General Hospital, at Crewe Road, Edinburgh, Scotland, is part of NHS Lothian, a Health Board which provides a comprehensive range of adult and paediatric care to the people of Edinburgh, the Lothians and beyond.The hospital has around 570 beds including day beds. It is one of the main teaching hospitals affiliated to the University of Edinburgh Medical School.FacilitiesAlthough the Western no longer has an Accident and Emergency, a nurse-led minor injuries unit has been running since 1994. The hospital does contain an Acute Receiving Unit and Admissions Unit which patients can be referred to by their general practitioner.The hospital serves as a base for the neurology and neurosurgery centre for south east Scotland ("Department of Clinical Neurosciences"), the regional oncology, infectious diseases and haematology Units, the regional Colorectal Surgical Unit and the Stroke Research Unit for Lothian. There is a major national cancer research and treatment centre at the hospital, which had refurbishment work completed in 2007. There is also a urology department on the site.

Yesterday I attended the day bad unit for a double GI procedure. I was very anxious about it. The unit is spotlessly clean throughout and I was greeted by a lovely receptionist. Once in the daybed section I met the staff, Monica and Lauren in particular were superb at making me feel comfortable. The theatre team led by Dr Eleanor Watson were amazing. Dr Campbell, Sheila, Sarah sorry if missed anyone put me so much at ease. The procedure, like many, had its uncomfortable moments but with the care, reassurance and friendliness of the team it went by without causing me any issues. If I had to go again I would have no anxieties. I trust these professionals. A huge, huge thank you to all of you. Oh and superb fresh sandwich and coffee afterwards to break my 48 hour fast!
Feeling very anxious on being admitted to ward 6 for major surgery, I was greeted by friendly, smiling nurses, Sophie and Claire who helped me to settle while I awaited the stream of calm, professional staff for all my pre-op admin, helping to reassure me about the surgical procedure and outcome. In the recovery ward, nurse Lauren was delightful and the nurses looking after room 7 overnight could not have been quieter or calmer or more respectful as they attended to patients’ needs. I felt so calm myself, thanks to the professionalism, care and quietness of the staff, space allocated to each bed, cleanliness of the ward and amazing views of the city skyline, that I even managed to read a novel! I can’t thank all, including cleaners and ancillary staff, who look after both the patients and environment of Ward 6 enough.
Absolutely fantastic service from entering the building to leaving. Everyone was friendly, efficient and very professional. Kept me informed throughout my several hours stay. I was even given a choice of sandwich for my lunch, which I didn't expect. Thank you all very much for your care and attention. I was worried and scared on arrival, I was dealt with quickly and informed of waiting time for test results coming back. After several hours I left feeling thankful that all was well, and that I'd had the best care possible.
I've attended the out of hours on Monday 19/9/22. I don't remember the name of the doctor but she was very nice, professional and welcoming! The hospital, in general, could have better indications: it took me a while to understand where the OOH was located and how to reach that.
Wonderful staff and treatment at the Western General Hospital, Nurses, Doctor's,Theatre Staff and Consultants were first class. A big thank you to all the staff at the Mammography Department and Ward 6, you are amazing!.
I Attended acute receiving unit at WGH and cannot speak highly enough regarding the care and service received. I underwent a number of tests; CT Scan, ECG, bloods and x-ray. The staff were attentive and kept me informed throughout. In my experience the NHS are doing an incredible job under extremely difficult circumstances.
My son with Special Needs was very welcome and looked after in the Minor Surgery Unit tonight Thank you to Joe reception and Louise nurse and Emma x-ray You are doing an amazing job and you made sure my son was well looked after Thank you
I could not praise the staff at the WGH enough for the treatment and care, my wife, Jean was given in the respiratory unit. The staff were caring and compassionate in her care, they also supported my daughters and myself when she passed away.
I was taken to the Acute Receiveing unit on Friday. It was very busy had to wait a while. I saw a nurse called Sarah first to take blood etc. The young doctor who was on did all the tests on me. Was back for a scan yesterday. Could not have better care anywhere else.
Waiting 6 hours for a blood test and a Covid test. Still no doctor seen yet. Should be helping people and applying for more staff, yet again not a great experience.
