University of Glasgow Library

Story

The University of Glasgow Library in Scotland is one of the oldest and largest university libraries in Europe. At the turn of the 21st century, the main library building itself held 1,347,000 catalogued print books, and 53,300 journals. In total, the university library system including branch libraries now holds approximately 2.5 million books and journals, along with access to 1,853,000 e-books, and over 50,000 e-journals. The University also holds extensive archival material in a separate building. This includes the Scottish Business Archive, which alone amounts to 6.2 kilometers of manuscripts. The current 12-storey building, opened in 1968, is a prominent landmark in Glasgow's West End and its distinctive outline can be seen from several kilometers around. In 2014, there were over 1.7 million visits made to the library.HistoryThe first explicit mention of the Library is dated November 1475, when the first donations by the University's Chancellor, Bishop John Laing, were recorded. After the Reformation the University of Glasgow and its Library were reinvigorated under the Principalship of Andrew Melville in 1574-80. The Library grew steadily throughout the 18th century due largely to the fact that it was granted legal deposit status between 1709 and 1836. Legal deposit ceased in 1836 and the Library was granted an annual lump sum which allowed it to develop its collections in line with the University's teaching and research interests. The library of the royal physician to Queen Charlotte, William Hunter, received in 1807, comprised some 10,000 volumes that augmented the library's holdings by fifty percent, and extended their reach well beyond the contemporary curriculum; of Hunter's 650 manuscript codices, over a hundred are illuminated, and his incunabula "accorded Glasgow a prominence that it could not have achieved with its own resources".

The best place to study. There is also a place for prayer.
A great space to study, though it's very hard to get a seat during the exam period or weeks 6-11 of each semester. Currently there are daily queues to get into the library in the morning.
Had books dating back to early 1910s! Paid a visit after spending months admiring the study-with-me YouTube videos. The view is incredible in real life!
Very friendly and helpful staff, excellent facilities Self-service machine and laptop borrowing. The library offers one of the best view as well Level 11. The Inter-Library Loans service is really good.
The third floor has an amazing couch space. Must visit, very comfortable.
First rate, excellent facilities, best collection in the area. The staff are very helpful, the coffee and food is first rate and the staff at the coffee shop are polite and very helpful, even given the number of people they have to serve every day. I love this place, massive number of computers, quiet study areas, private group rooms, librarians are very helpful and professional, security keep a tight ship too. It's the best library I have ever used. If you can get access ever even for a short time, then you should come to this place, you could learn anything the world has to offer, from within these walls, if only they could speak... G...
Great, more or less. A huge building with lots of modern computers, excellent literature and amazing views. Can be irritating with often out of order water fountains, out of order toilets for some time requiring a journey to find one that actually works. Often it is a mission to find a free computer many people seem to need computer and laptop.., but it is dreamy during summer as it is so quiet.
It's overcrowded ~ some students are sitting on the floor as there are not enough seats for all the bums. Is very run down and dirty too. The carpets are easily 10 years old. The toilets are disgusting. The walls have scum/rust running down them. How dirty those keyboards are! You should wait 5-10 minutes to use the lift during busy times. Is this the standard of this century ? I reckon it was better 30 years ago.
It’s awesome
The best place to get away to and work if you are looking to work uninterrupted and undisturbed. More than enough study spaces and the perfect work ambience.
