Our first time at Umai and certainly won't be our last. Divine food, wonderfully presented , fresh with lovely tasty ingredients. The starters/sides/small plates are superb! There was 4 of us and we got 5 of these which was plenty. The main dishes were incredible and good sizes. The staff are great , friendly and attentive. Really can't and don't want to find any fault or negative for Umai, it is fantastic! Vegetarian options: Lots of great options for vegetarians... Great choices.
It was my first time visiting here tonight. The service is very efficient and friendly. Its a small tucked away restaurant with an intimate dining experience. The food was gorgeous and great value too. Better than a Wagamama I would say. Highly recommended.
The quality of the fish in the Salmon Don was excellent! The prawn tempura had the best tempura batter we have ever had. My friend had the chicken teriyaki box which was apparently delicious
Our first time visiting tonight, and it was wonderful! There is a fast pace and turnover - I'd defintely advise booking a table - but you're not rushed out, and the food is incredible! Can't wait to go back already!!

Authentic Sushi in Shrewsbury Where do I start with Umai, what a lovely little place! We booked a table for the evening, and we throughly enjoyed our night. Lots to choose from on the menu and everything tasted amazing! Favourite dish - Takoyaki Will most definitely be recommending and returning!
We are regular patrons of Japanese and Korean food, so would like to think we know what good looks like. Having stumbled upon the seemingly strong ratings for Umai, we decided to give them a try. The first thing we noticed is that this Japanese restaurant is runned by mainland Chinese folks; yet we still held hope that we would find something authentic. Upon placing our orders, the waitress insisted that there was a minimum of £15 spend per person. This was not advertised, nor was it mentioned when we booked. She insisted and this left a negative initial impression. Then came the small portions of Japanese sushi, which are not made for authenticity. It's passable, the kind that is laced with mayo and sweetened with other condiments -- probably on par with say, a Wagamama, but they aren't the real deal if that is indeed what you are looking for. The kimchi bibimbap was rather tiny, tasteless and under powered. The ramen noodles soup was decent, but there wasn't anything that stood out. The one thing that was unique was the octopus wasabi starter, which although small in portion, packed a real punch in terms of taste. Overall though, we were not impressed and Umai would not be place we would return to. Shrewsbury deserves more authentic Japanese!
If you are visiting Shrewsbury or you are a local, don’t miss out and visit this small restaurant with big flavours. We ordered sushi and bimbimbap and it was fresh and delicious, the only inconvenience was that the waitress was a bit impatient in taking our order but the food was well worth it. Will repeat if I visit Shrewsbury again.
Fast service, food was delicious, couldn't have asked for any more. Definitely come here if you get the chance - I don't give that many 5* reviews!Food: 5/5
Amazing flavor! Everything fresh. Take into consideration that the portions are small, so order different plates. I'll definitely come back.
