Unassuming from the road as the place seems a little neglected. Inside was also somewhat antiquated, however much to my surprise the place was bustling when I entered and I had a job to get to the bar. Couldn't decide between a real ale or cider so the Landlord insisted I try a sample of them all! Great local selection and well kept too. I wasn't dining either but the food looked homecooked and very reasonably priced compared to the other hostelries in the locality. I shall return to dine next when the Wife is at the Inlaws which means I'll have to find my own supper.
Spent 4 nights at the hotel and enjoyed every moment, Sarah, Mark and the staff friendly and nothing to much trouble, food was fantastic breakfast was excellent, Paul looked after us at breakfast and we enjoyed a few drinks in the bar on our last night with him,we will go back againRooms: 4/5
We would come back here in a heartbeat. Great, friendly atmosphere. Nothing was too much trouble for our kind hosts, Mark and Sara and the building and grounds are charming and beautiful. It's not the Hilton, but neither is the price. We cannot remember better value for money. The food was great and the accommodation comfortable. Thanks for a great long weekend. Pete and Karen
I have visited this country house Inn/hotel over several decades. It sort of grows on me! I've never stayed there but I've frequently eaten and have had plenty of morning coffees, lunchtime drinks, and evening meals. It doesn't do anything exceptionally well, but is a cut above the local competition in offering a country style environment which allows dogs in the bar, and offers patrons a comfortable relaxed surroundings.
We have just had a wonderful stay. We booked for 2 and decided to increase it to 3 nights. Mark and Sarah were so helpful and accommodating to enable us to do this. We would definitely recommend it and will be going back again. Its in a beautiful spot.Rooms: 5/5
My wife and I were looking forward to spending a few days in the Newforest and visiting Christchurch. When we checked in to Tyrrell's Ford and went to our room we were greeted by a broken bed, cracked bathroom floor tiles, water marked walls, paint peeling off the windows. I told the reception and asked if we could be moved. When the gentleman finally returned we were told "have a look at this room but if you don't like it unfortunately that is all we have". We did look at the room and thought it was marginally better. This bed again had been broken but had been repaired with a piece of 4x2 timber. The ceiling light rose had slipped down the wire, water stains again on the wall, broken bed side cabinet, one wall light not working, paint peeling off the window, more spider webs than spider man movie. I could go on but I'm beginning to bore myself. This hotel is in a lovely location within what could be lovely grounds. It wouldn't take a lot to tidy up the two rooms we looked at just with a lick of paint and a little more attention to detail by the staff.
The minute I stepped through the front door, I felt as though I had somehow gone through a time warp and arrived in a parallel universe back in 1975. It felt a little like being in the middle of a Fawlty Towers episode. Ringing the bell on the reception counter, and waiting an age, I truly expected Basil Fawlty to pop his head round the corner. It would have been great if he had. Alas, no Basil, Sybil, Manuel or even a moose head made an appearance, but a moth-eaten, mangy dog materialised and looked up at me. I was instantly reminded of that Peter Seller’s film when he asked the supposed owner if his dog would bite. When he was assured it wouldn’t, Sellers stuck his hand out … whereupon the dog immediately bit it. “I thought you said your dog wouldn’t bite.” Peter shouted painfully. “That’s not my dog,” came the reply. I jabbed the bell again. This time, a lady finally arrived and gave me the key to my room. Upon entering, I half-half expected Jeremy Beadle to greet me. Anaglypta wallpaper hung from the walls; slightly grubby, threadbare carpets were badly glued to the floor. The pictures on the walls were hilarious and straight out of a car boot sale circa 1975 too. The bed was clean but rather lumpy and the view out of the window was of a run-down courtyard full of dustbins. There is a restaurant of sorts here and I was tempted to try it. It might have been fun to ask for a Waldorf salad but I’m sure that if they’d told me they’d run out of Waldorfs, I wouldn’t have been able to keep a straight face. In the end, I went to the New Queen pub a mile down the road as I didn’t want to risk eating at the hotel. I was awoken in the middle of the night by a dog howling. At least, I think it was a dog, it would have come as no surprise to learn that werewolves roam the adjoining forest. Looking at the other reviews, almost every one mentions that the place needs serious updating. Can’t the owners read? Or perhaps they’re just not bothered. The grounds are the only good thing here and this hotel has the potential of being terrific, but it is very much overdue for a total restoration. In short, if you like lumpy beds, ancient wallpaper, mangy dogs and werewolves … you’ll love this place. Sadly, although I had booked and paid in advance for a two-night stay, I wasn’t going to endure a second night and checked out early. Dogs are welcome … best not try stroking any though, just to be on the safe side.
I stayed for three nights which wasn't enough. The building and grounds are full of character, the room was huge, very lovely staff and for an extremally reasonable price. I will defiantly be staying again.Rooms: 5/5
Super location, lovely old building but very tired. The place could use a bit of updating and sad to say my room was a little shabby and grubby and the mattress very poor quality. Having said that the atmosphere was special and the ales in very good condition. The large garden was pleasant and there was plenty of parking.Rooms: 3/5
