We as a family could not recommend Tippethill highly enough for their standard of care and compassion! We had a family member in the Baillie wing of the hospital and the care he received was second to none, they ensured he was well fed, making him whatever he wanted when he wanted it. They kept everyone well informed of his health and plans for treatment etc. The ensuite room he had was immaculate and was regularly deep cleaned. The girls were so invested in his wellbeing and were often found chatting to him and exchanging jokes to keep him company! Not only did they care so much about him, they cared about all of us as a family, even attending his funeral, which was very touching to all of us we can remember a great man in peace knowing he lived the end of his life to the fullest of his ability in a place where he was cared so well for as he couldn't be at home and for that we are eternally grateful to you all
No words can express the gratitude and appreciation , my family and I feel. For the professional , dedicated ,caring and loving way all the staff treated my husband during the last 3 months of his life. He was so well looked after., however it didn't end there the kindness and care shown to myself and my family was a wonderful comfort at such a difficult time of our lives, THANK YOU isn't enough ,
I've been in Tippethill, the Baillie wing for just over a week now. At first, coming from St John's hospital, I was more than a little bit nervous. As I will be here until my time is up. I need not have worried, i could not have asked for or expected the level of caring staff they have here. They are a busy medical wing, but still manage to take the time to talk to me, make sure that I am OK, not just saying that I'm OK. The food, I get a great choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are plenty snacks avaliable throughout the day and night. Cold drinks avaliable all the time as well. But its the staff for me. So many nice dedicated people working in the one area. I dont know how they have managed to gather so many great staff here, but I hope they can keep this team here, together, for a very long time to come.
My mum spent her last months in the Baillie wing. I could never thank the staff enough at how well they looked after her, they treated her with compassion and dignity. All the staff from nurses and nursing assistants are fantastic. They had a very personal touch not only with my mum but with me, it was a very difficult time for me and they were so supportive, they helped me thru my darkest time and I will always be grateful. When my mum passed away they continued to be supportive to me and my family, a few off the nurses even came to my mums funeral which was a very thoughtful thing for them to do considering how busy they all are. Keep up the great work, you all do an amazing job, you are all a credit to the NHS. Marie, Rona, Jo, Hazel, Fran and the rest off the team at Baillie I will be forever grateful as to how you all looked after my mum. Barry
I just want to thank all the staff at tippet hill for the all the care and attention that was given to my mum Jean , she was in tippithill for 3 years she was so well looked after, the staff are absolutely wonderful, they have worked all through the pandemic.Every time I visited I was welcomed with a smile. My mum has moved to a nursing home but as a family we feel the care she has received is down to the staff. Marie, jo, Angela,Hazel, Marissa,Ellie, Rona,Brenda there is so many more but from the bottom of my heart Thankyou x
I'm not sure what people's expectations are of a palliative nursing home but I can honestly say that my Mum and all our family have nothing but good positive feedback for Tippethill. The staff were all friendly and nothing was ever a bother for them. They treated her with kindness and consideration. Their facility is clean, fresh smelling and bright. We would like to say a big thank you to all who helped look after Mum.
This hospice/hospital is horrible. While a close family member was in here for their final days I witnessed buzzers getting ignored. My mum helped a poor woman who was screaming for help while the nurses were only 3-4 metres away from here. During the night we stayed to comfort my dying my family member and we were made to feel like we were intruders and we shouldn't have been there. It is a horrible horrible place. A formal complaint will also be made to the NHS in relation to the way this place is run. Do NOT under any circumstances put your family members in this place. They are safer were they are!
I did a placement here as a student nurse. The care is...well, shocking. Ignoring buzzers, telling patients to urinate on their pad instead of assisting them to the toilet. Staff uncaring, nursing staff told me to "suck it up" if I tried to report anything. Honestly, if any of my relatives were placed here...I would take them out asap. When the charge nurse isn't there, all the staff have their break at once in the dining area and ignore the buzzers. Some serious training is needed for the staff here.
My mother spent the last 19 months of her life here in the female-only Rosebery Wing under a Compulsory Treatment Order. Nothing wrong with her other than dementia, but the consultant psychiatrist in charge of the ward did not approve of me caring for her at home, and used the Mental Health Act to over-ride our wishes. The hospital is on a pleasant green but small and remote site between Whitburn and Armadale. Bus services stop outside. The interior is clean, bright and spacious. There is a larger pleasant fenced garden and a smaller walled courtyard. Most patients have their own ensuite rooms, a few have only a small area curtained-off from the main corridor. A hairdresser visits regularly. One Activities Co-ordinator is often seen, offering arts/crafts activities. But there is no attempt by staff to engage patients in meaningful physical activity ADLs such as dusting, laundry, baking or preparation of meals. Staff are polite, dedicated and professional in their attitude but I do not think they really understand dementia, the elderly, or the Patients' Charter. They keep strict visiting hours. Delays in opening the ward are not compensated by an extension at the end. There is was no open visiting, except for those whose death is imminent. Relatives are treated as intruders rather than a resource and as Equal Partners in Care. In 2 years I was only once invited to help my mother with her dinner, on her final Christmas Day, at the suggestion of a junior nurse. On all other occasions I was asked to leave the ward between the afternoon and evening visiting periods. There is no understanding of the dangers of sedentary behaviour, the need of elderly patients for adequate physical exercise and meaningful activity, even though deaths are almost exclusively the immobile. Patients who can walk safely on their own are left to do so, usually without supervision, sometimes resulting in falls and fractures. Those who cannot walk independently are rarely encouraged or assisted to do so. They are subtly discouraged from walking, guided back to a chair, and become chair or bed bound. No effort is made to avoid loss of mobility. Exercise is not part of any care plan, it is left to the the patient or the relatives. Patients are left sitting or lying down for several hours at a time without breaks for physical activity. Opportunities for exercise by walking to the toilet or dining room are avoided in favour of using hoists and wheelchairs. Patients are often put in deep reclining "bucket" chairs from which they have no hope of escape. When I've pointed out patients struggling to get out of them to walk or use the toilet, instead of helping them get up and walk, staff settled them back into the chair. When I asked for my mother to be walked I was prohibited from doing so or taking part, on the consultant's orders senior staff refused if she showed initial reluctance as most people with dementia do, especially if they have fallen in the past, even though after a few steps her mobility rapidly improved. When her reluctance coincided with their wishes they said "She is the boss," when her wishes were contrary they ignored it. One day she said to me "I can't take any more of this. Will you kill me, love?" The response of the senior nurses was to put her on suicide watch! The consultant was determined not to allow any outings nor to discuss any options which might result in her returning to my care. When I pointed out signs of deteriorating blood circulation the nurses dismissed it and suggested that I provide thermal underwear. They refused to arrange for me to discuss my concerns with the visiting GP. When an independent geriatrician made a referral for a physiotherapy assessment it was blocked by the consultant psychiatrist, his recommendation of passive exercises was rejected, and consent for him to examine my mother was refused. She died 3 weeks later.
Students expose systemic abuse of dying patients Helen Puttick, Scottish Health Correspondent March 6 2018, 12:01am, The Times Health The students raised concerns about Tippethill House Hospital with a lecturer after seeing patients shouted at and pushed A “culture of neglect” at a hospital that cares for dying patients was exposed by nursing students after they were sent there on a work placement. Staff pushing a patient’s face to get them to move, shouting and verbal aggression were among the problems uncovered on a 30-bed wing of Tippethill House Hospital in West Lothian. Concern that basic hygiene rules were being ignored, patients were not being handled appropriately and that records had been falsified were raised by the students from the University of Edinburgh, who told a lecturer what they had seen.
