The Whitaker

About

Rossendale's Museum and Art Gallery, set in the grounds of Whitaker Park in Rawtenstall. Food served Wednesday to Sunday daytime and Friday evenings.

Story

The Whitaker (previously Rossendale Museum & Art Gallery) is set in a beautiful park at the centre of the Rossendale Valley, Lancashire. A little 'gem' of the valley originally built in 1840 and heroically rescued from closure in 2013 when it embarked on a loving and passionate journey of restoration and enhancement under the leadership of the newly formed 'Whitaker Group'.

Currently run as a 'not-for-profit' community organisation, and supported by a niche inhouse team and some incredible volunteers, The Whitaker continues to be a unique and wonderous place that remains in place for the community, celebrating its amazing heritage and reconnecting it with cultures past and present.

The newly refurbished restaurant and gallery space is a delight to spend time in, with a lunch time menu no to be passed on. Speciality Tea and Coffee, as well as our famed Cake collection is also served all day.

Mission

To create an exciting and stimulating attraction that exploits its current collection while creating a new family orientated programme of events and exhibitions, and offering a welcoming place to meet, hold workshops, run classes and other community activities.

A cracking little find right on our doorstep.nIf you're offended by vintage taxidermy, then maybe not for you.nSome wonderful exhibits in a wonderful house.nThe entrance is free, also a beautifully decorated. With great food, a cafe is attached.
Really interesting things in there. Arts wasn't very interesting this time, but there is more than just that there.nNice cafe and a big park to walk around in with plenty of room for kids to run around. Tennis courts and football pitch as well. Will be back when everything is warmer and plants are in full bloom.
Visited here on a late Sunday afternoon bh aswell . Pleased by free parking. Disabled access If needed. Was slightly disappointed as the cafe was shut that day but the museum.was open. Free entry to museum but donations welcomed to help support.nThis is a hidden little gem.nLots of interesting things to look at Inside .. a few pics to tease to the spoils but certainly doesn't show all the things to haze upon. The exhibition we saw was voiced by Jane horrors and is only there until June 1st. Will definitely be going to pack to see future installations.
Brilliant local museum hiding in plain sight housing a fascinating permanent collection, especially the Cabinet of Curiosities. The museum hosts regular contemporary art exhibitions, and a range of community activities and workshops.nnThe grounds feature a community garden, tennis courts, and sculptures, and there is now a bar and restaurant.nnFree entry, with donation points which take cash or card, and there's a gift shop.nnA short walk from Rawtenstall town centre, and accessible via the 464 bus route Accrington - Rochdale.
An amazing collection of taxidermy! Had a lot of fun here. The little cafe is really nice too. Plus - free entry! Donations welcome of course.
