The Whitaker

About

Rossendale's Museum and Art Gallery, set in the grounds of Whitaker Park in Rawtenstall. Food served Wednesday to Sunday daytime and Friday evenings.

Story

The Whitaker (previously Rossendale Museum & Art Gallery) is set in a beautiful park at the centre of the Rossendale Valley, Lancashire. A little 'gem' of the valley originally built in 1840 and heroically rescued from closure in 2013 when it embarked on a loving and passionate journey of restoration and enhancement under the leadership of the newly formed 'Whitaker Group'.

Currently run as a 'not-for-profit' community organisation, and supported by a niche inhouse team and some incredible volunteers, The Whitaker continues to be a unique and wonderous place that remains in place for the community, celebrating its amazing heritage and reconnecting it with cultures past and present.

The newly refurbished restaurant and gallery space is a delight to spend time in, with a lunch time menu no to be passed on. Speciality Tea and Coffee, as well as our famed Cake collection is also served all day.

Mission

To create an exciting and stimulating attraction that exploits its current collection while creating a new family orientated programme of events and exhibitions, and offering a welcoming place to meet, hold workshops, run classes and other community activities.

I attended recently with my classmates. I didn't want to spoil too much in terms of the displays in the museum, but it was a wonderful experience. The staff were very kind. The layout and display inside are stunning; I've included some pictures of what I've taken. I would love to show all the photos, but I don't want it to discourage people from going to the Whitaker. There are fantastic displays, and the café serves terrific coffee.
Visited her to meet up with friends and grab drink and lunch. Very impressed with whole set up and a fabulous place to visit, catering for all ages.nPark is beautifully maintained and set out, with even a community garden encouraging people to enjoy free herbs and cuttings.nA baby playgroup was being held outside, which looked great fun for all.nOnly managed a quick scoot around the actual house, so didn't enjoy the galleries, but chatted to staff who gave me a potted history, which matched the stunning venue.
I can't believe we've not visited the museum before today as we pass it weekly. Free parking and entrance with the loveliest of welcomes both at reception and in the cafe. Not the biggest museum but interesting exhibits, especially in the cupboard of curiosities. Great quality coffee, the food menu looks good too, sadly we won't be going for a pint with its £8.00 price tag.
Idiosyncratic museum. Lots of unusual exhibits, gift shop selling items representing local area. I bought some unusual bithday cards painted by a local artist, great cafe which can whip up a mean cup of coffee. We also had chicken fried in panko, truly delicious. Manynvolunteers who love to advise and adore their job. Nothing too much trouble. Tons of free parking, children's play area. Really enjoyed our afternoon out, truly blessed that this is on our door step.
The Whitaker is a nice local museum which has had some investment/upgrades since the Pandemic. It has a lovely cafe with great views.nnThe museum itself has been updated as well and the exhibits are neatly presented. If you’ve taken the East Lancs Railway up, it’s worth the visit while you’re here
