What an incredible place to visit. Housing over 20 exhibitions of engines that were used to power the cotton mills of old. The standard of condition of these working exhibits are excellent. As far as I'm aware, it's run by volunteers, all incredibly knowledgeable about each engine, and able to tell the tale of each engines life. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the wonder of British engineering that made the country the finest in the world at what they did. To think they are still running and looking prestige in 2018 is truly incredible. This is a must see when exploring Boltons heritage.

My son and I had a most wonderful time here at the Bolton steam museum. If I could give more stars I would!! We had travelled up from Hythe, Kent and were given a facinating and informative tour round the museum and even had some of the engines started for us!!! How different to get the chance to see them working, they are so much more imposing when the massive flywheels are spinning. Access was easy and I see no problems facing the disabled. Toilets are on site. All in all an incredible experience and I highly recommend the Bolton steam museum to all.

Good interesting place to visit. We visited with our kids. Staff were very friendly and gave a lot of info on the steam engines.the wonderful staff volunteer, this museum is not funded by any authority. It relies upon donations, it is absolutely free to visit though. Good to visit on live steam days where you can see everything in action .

Has a great collection of steam engines huge and small kept in working order by dedicated volunteers who are glad to show you around and answer questions at length. They can show you several of them in action, although only on special days. On other days they can drive them with an electric motor, so you can see how the parts move--interesting in itself. Only open Wednesday and Sunday; check their web site for steam days.
