We had to go and find a wedding venue in Shute. So thought we'd drop in The Stables on our way back and I must say since our last visit approximately 2yrs ago we were pretty impressed. The place hasn't changed a lovely relaxing country pub on outskirts of Exeter. Plenty of parking inc disabled out the front on the flat 2 outdoor seating areas always a bonus. So the food Clairo had the smaller appetite Scampi which she really enjoyed I went for the The Stables Burger.... Beautiful meaty dense Patti with bacon, cheese, tomato and I think remaine lettuce. Very good, pile of thick steak chips not my favorite but ate half of them, I found the slaw could of done with more dressing but that's just personal choice, good choice of drinks. The servers were very good, so yeah a very nice experience and one we will be repeating .
Staff was very professional especially Hayley, our waitress. Very accomodating but not over the top. Food was served quickly and tasted amazing. We love it here and will definetely be back.
First time in The Stables. Went in for lunch with Mother and my Brother. Staff were really friendly and helpful. A very good, and varied, menu which also catered very well for vegetarians. Food was excellent, very tasty and hot. I tried a local Devon Red Cider from Sanfords I believe, or something like that but it was very tasty. There was a good selection of other beers as well. All in all, an excellent lunch, which we all enjoyed. Highly recommended. Vegetarian options: Wide range using local produce.
I’m really sad to say that our roast dinner was not very good today, Such a pity as we have come here often for a roast but today the potatoes were very hard and the Lamb was disgusting that 3 of us out of the 4 left most of it, it was soggy and tasteless and looked half chewed up.The service was poor we had to ask for mint sauce had to ask for a spoon to serve our veg and also ask for extra gravy as we had very little. I’m so sorry to write this review as normally it’s 5 stars, safe to say I will not return for a roast dinner again,
I’ve only eaten here twice, but both times were excellent. The food is delicious & fresh, the staff are friendly & the atmosphere is relaxed. Although I don’t exactly live on the doorstep I’ll definitely be back for more visitsRecommended dishesSunday Roast
We use to like the place but to see a member of staff in shorts serving food put us completely off. Also the service was terrible. Main course about 20 minutes and 25 minites waiting for a dessert was very poor. We won't be returning. Over one and three quarters hours for 2 courses is a disgrace. Parking: Good parking.
to be perfectly honest, I was a little disappointed. I ordered the special, pan fried Sea Bream with brown shrimp and caper butter sauce. The new potatoes were lovely, the samphire a little under seasoned and unremarkable, but I'm afraid to say the bream had been shown the pan for a couple of minutes too long, as were the capers too. the fish was overdone, not to the point of being inedible, but it had lost that juicy texture that makes bream so special, and the capers in the sauce were soggy rather than the delicious little explosions of sour ness that they could have been. there was a saving grace of a rather nice Chilean sauvignon blanc that rescued the palate a little, but to be fair the dish could have been so much more. service was fine, atmosphere a little chilly but quiet enough to concentrate on the food. Hopefully the chef will , next time, not be quite so scared of the fish and allow it to be all it could be. I'm not averse to going back again....watch this space.
