The Running Mare

About

A gorgeous pub full of rural charm and character sitting in the outskirts of Chelmsford. Offering food from 12pm-10pm daily and serving Cask Marque ales

Story

The inn dates back to the 18th century and the first registered landlord was Robert Lemon. Prior to being named The Running Mare, the inn was known as The Trues, The Tanners and The King's Head. The tradition of changing names extends to the town in which the pub sits. In the Domesday Book of 1086 Chelmsford was called 'Celmeresfort' but by 1189, the town's name had changed to the current Chelmsford.
A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

First visit here. Came for their Sunday roast. Food was really good. Really enjoyed it. The place is lovely, nice atmosphere and decor. It was busy, which I see as a good sign, but there were plenty of friendly attentive staff. Eton mess and apple pie deserts were fantastic.
First time visit for a Sunday Roast. Not sure what to expect but it was completely full when we arrived with a nice atmosphere. Food was really good, not the best Roast I’ve had in Essex but the beef was tender, veg was good and it was a large portion. Sides are a little pricy £5ish for what you get but overall can’t complain. Desserts were decent too. Looking forward to returning to try their other menus. Kid-friendliness: Took our 4month old and they accommodated a buggy
Great food, great service and lovely decor. We have booked for New Year's Eve as it's so good. Will be there before though. Also got a voucher for a free 3 course meal as it was my birthday Food: 5/5
First time at Ego. Lovely decor, great attention to detail. It was a very cold morning and they had log fires alight to try and make it as cosy as possible. We had breakfast which was tasty and well presented. Very good menu, we are going back again next week.
Went for Sunday Lunch after hearing many good things. We were greeted and seated and then left for quite a while. Our waiter finally came to the table and we ordered drinks and our meal order. After a short wait one of our starters arrived at our table but still no drinks. The other starter had mistakenly not been ordered. Eventually our drinks arrived and the missing starter was quickly prepared and was also taken off the bill. The food was fresh and very well presented and tasty. Our main was the Trio of Roasts and aging presented very nice and was lovely. The chicken breast was excellent the beef was only one very small slice and the pork had a very overpowering taste of Garlic but was tender and all the vegetables were nice. The Eaton Mess for dessert was also very very nice. Our waiter later explained he had only been working there a few days and was very apologetic for any mistakes or incompetence at the start of the meal.. Overall our experience was positive and we enjoyed our food and will visit again.
Absolutely top marks for a superb Brunch at the Running Mare. Booked a table for 4 people and we had a brilliant pre-Christmas brunch with lots of great Xmas decorations and a real log fire. The staff were friendly and attentive. A really nice experience. Thank you guys. Will do this again. Food: 5/5
Nice atmosphere and good service. They have vegan menu with gluten free options, the food was really good. I recommend it.Food: 5/5
Great place to eat. Only lost 1 star on the service as has to have the bull changed to Monday menu rather than it being applied automatically. Made quite a big difference. Other than that couldn't fault it. Staff were great, food and drink was great. Kid-friendliness: Very attentive and accommodating of the little ones
Stopped for a quick pint and all I can say is, it's totally 5 star all round! Really Clean and modern.Service: 5/5
Had a lovely meal here this evening. Wife had a hanging kebab and I had a pepperoni pizza, both were delicious. The dog had a chicken bark bowl which also went down very well! Must also mention the sticky toffee pudding Food: 5/5
