Story

The Rose was an Elizabethan theatre. It was the fourth of the public theatres to be built, after The Theatre (1576), the Curtain (1577), and the theatre at Newington Butts (c. 1580?) – and the first of several playhouses to be situated in Bankside, Southwark, in a liberty outside the jurisdiction of the City of London's civic authorities.HistoryThe Rose was built in 1587 by Philip Henslowe and by a grocer named John Cholmley. It was the first purpose-built playhouse to ever stage a production of any of Shakespeare's plays. The theatre was built on a messuage called the "Little Rose," which Henslowe had leased from the parish of St. Saviour, Southwark in 1585. The Rose was the first of several theatres to be situated in Bankside, Southwark near the south shore of the River Thames. The area was known for its leisure attractions such as bear/bull-baitings, gaming dens and brothels. It was located in the Liberty of Clink, a liberty outside the jurisdiction of the City of London's civic authorities. The Rose contained substantial rose gardens and two buildings; Cholmley used one as a storehouse, while Henslowe appears to have leased the other as a brothel. North of London, professional playhouses like the Curtain Theatre and The Theatre had already been open for over a decade. However, Henslowe recognized the ease at which audiences could ferry across the River of Thames and established a playhouse in this particular location.

The rose theatre is a quirky, fascinating place to visit. Spooky and subterranial, yet also packed with history. The only shame is that it hasn't had enough donations yet for restorative work...and that it has been obscured by a massive great office block. It's the perfect quick-history trip...even better if you're off to the globe and you want to see where Shakespeare first started out...possibly in the form of Christopher Marlowe...
A hidden wonder two minutes from the South Bank. Feel smug when the crowds are paying to visit the 'fake' globe just around the corner. Get to see the original foundations of this 1587 theatre - the first on the bankside. Run by passionate volunteers - ask them where the term box office comes from. Really recommend making the effort to find it.
Great little place. Very atmospheric. Have seen some great fringe theatre here. Worth supporting!
Extremely unique theatre venue that puts on quality productions at a very good price. It's quite hard to find it though, and it is quite chilly in there. Lucky they have blankets on hand for everyone!
I was there for the Tuesday Matinee with family to see Midsummer Night's Dream, & was really impressed by the production. Using the original text, the language was made accessible by the delivery, the costumes & staging were both imaginative & effective, & the actors delivered with verve. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable production, enjoyed by all from young to old. Can't recommend enough.
Fantastic place to go for some intimate theatre productions. A cause worth donating too as well.
Great to see remains of the original- cheap tickets and good play. It was really a cold evening but blankets are provided
Amazing historical theatre. You can visit for free on Saturdays and be entertained by a presentation of the Rose theatres foundations and future plans for the site. When I went was treated to an engaging demonstration of Elizabethan dress. Do go and support their fundraising to secure the future of this site of historical and cultural importance.
Interesting ruins of probably the first theatre in London the place of Shakespeare first plays. Really in need of a visit and small donation to preserve it.
Amazing place the history the staff all amazing it's a must see
