Golden Hinde

Story

The Golden Hinde is a mountain located in the Vancouver Island Ranges on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. At 2195m, it is the highest peak on the island. The mountain is located near the geographic centre of Vancouver Island, as well as near the centre of 2450km2 Strathcona Provincial Park, at the head of the Wolf River and to the west of Buttle Lake, about 25km east of the community of Gold River. The peak is popular with experienced backcountry-climbers, having been first ascended in 1913. The mountain is made of basalt which is part of the Karmutsen Formation. The mountain took its name from Sir Francis Drake's ship, the Golden Hind, by an early fur-trading captain, who was reminded of Drake's ship as sunset hit the mountain (which is visible from the west coast of the Island) and in honour of Drake's reputed presence off the coast of the future British Columbia during the explorer's circumnavigation of the globe from 1577–80 (see New Albion). The present name was not officially conferred until 1938, but this was done after a reference to the peak in a fur-trader's log. The alternative name "The Rooster's Comb" was used by early alpinists because of the mountain's appearance.

Interesting replica, sadly in need of serious restoration as it seems to be in a bad way. They need your funds everyone. So much work needed doing on this amazing replica that has already sailed further than the original vessel. It's been around the world and it shows. So please pay the little fee to go aboard and have a look around and imagine what it would be like in a confined space in very basic living conditions. Please watch out for low wooden beams as it's very small inside . I shall be back next year . I recommend you go and have a look. It's cheap to get aboard . Once you've explored go and look at what's close like "The Clink " just around the corner. And some fine eating and bars. Just along the river is the Globe theatre too.
So cool! My Dad saw this replica of the original ship when it was sailing around the UK in the 80s, and was interested to see how it's aged and been restored since then. £6 per adult to climb aboard is cheap by London standards, and included access to audio guides via QR codes dotted around the boat. Captain Bluebird apologies I didn't catch your real name is enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and fortunately breaks character enough to have a serious conversation if there aren't kids nearby. He told us that the replica has travelled more miles than the original Golden Hinde ever did, so it's a real piece of history in itself! A great alternative to the bigger, more expensive attractions in the City, and worth supporting.
Steps away from Borough Market and London Bridge, this is quite the view when you enter that little area defined by twists and turns on cobbled stone walks and old passage ways. The ship itself is a replica of Francis Drake’s ship, and is sitting in dry dock. There is an admission fee to embark the ship. For those with little interest in ships, an outside view may be more than sufficient and it’s free. For those paying to embark, budget 30-45 minutes for your self guided tour. As the ship is small, add more time for those looking closely at the spectacular wooden work, furniture, lines and sails. Overall the ship is considered small and compact. There is very limited signage or museum-like mounted explainers so touring the ship is a breeze. It’s great for children as, unlike in a museum, they can pretty much touch or climb anything except going up to the mast.
A traditional sea ship which is famous for couple of things and have a long history. This seaworthy replica been built for an advanture of the famous XVI century galleon which navigate around the world. Located a short walk from London Bridge station and pier and only £7 pp. A must see if you love the history and.in the area for a walk.
I hired the Golden Hinde for my daughter’s birthday party aged 9 and can’t recommend it highly enough. Such a wonderful venue- the party entertainer Gary was brilliant- so great with the kids. The feast with pewter tankards and plates was very atmospheric and everyone had a wonderful time. It was stress free for us parents too. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
Visiting the Golden Hinde was an unforgettable experience, especially for someone who's never been to England before. Stepping aboard this full-sized replica of Sir Francis Drake's famous ship felt like traveling back in time. The intricate details and craftsmanship were impressive and amazing to imagine what life was like for the sailors during their epic voyages. This visit gave me a deeper appreciation for England's maritime history and was a highlight of my trip.
Always looking for fun summer holiday experiences for the children at work, I came across this pirate training workshop on the Golden Hinde. Getting your pirate on while on an actual ship in the middle of London? Sounds amazing! This 45 minute workshop for children 5-10 yrs old is absolutely as brilliant as it sounds. Our captain immediately got the attending children into the swing of things, teaching them nautical terms, sea shanties, and sword fighting across the ship. Racing from the deck through several levels of the ship, and up to the captain's quarters, it's a brilliant adventure for small ones aspiring to the pirate life! We really enjoyed this little workshop that's quite affordable for London standards at only £11 for children, plus £6 per supervising adult, which is just the regular entry fee for adults, as only children get to participate in this workshop unfortunately. A really fun outing, we spent some time finding out more about the ship before the workshop began and lingered after to explore the ship some more. Make sure to dress up in your best pirate gear if you want to get the most out of your visit!
Lovely visit to the Golden Hinde following a trip to Borough Market. My little boy saw it and wanted to go on a real life pirate ship ! The cast were great in telling the very interested group of boys all about the trials and tribulations of life aboard back in the day. A nice break for the parents on a hot day too!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
We had a lovely time on our visit. I took my 9 year old son. We had lots of fun exploring the ship and did lots of ducking below deck! We learnt lots about the Golden Hinde’s expedition to the Americas and what the sailors/pirates got up to. We were shown how the cannons were cleaned and loaded. Then we learnt about the barber surgeon and the gruesome procedures he performed onboard. It was educational and lots of fun. It didn’t take a long time to go round but it was an hour well spent. All the staff were brilliant, very enthusiastic and friendly.
