Came with my parents after a recommendation from a friend. It's a lovely 5 hotel. The staff were lovely, really warm and welcoming, especially to our 2 young collies. We had booked a table in the bar, which was really nice. My allergy was dealt with really well and they managed to find some nob seeded bread for me. The food was just amazing, the black pudding with Crispy egg was superb and the duck was to die for . I didn't want either to end! The pork tenderloin was lovely and the sausage and chips looked great. My dad said the dripping chips were just like his.mum had made!! The goats cheese salad, eaten as a main looked wonderful. I was great to have such wonderful local produce and the wine and beers were great too.
What a gem! we stayed for 3 nights and the food was superb as was the service and the staff are excellent but not obtrusive you felt you could not ask for the wrong thing. Our room was lovely and had everything we needed our welcome afternoon tea was a great touch . Also the tea and coffee brought to you either in your room or downstairs is just great much better than making it yourself and is always available. My husband had a slight accident and they could not help us enough Richard Rose the owner went above and beyond to help us. Indeed their concern was so heartwarming. We will return many times I am sure and have already booked our next stay. Thank you so much to you all !
The place has existed for about 200 years. Came for lunch so did not have any of the drinks though they seemed to have. Fairly good wine selection. The food was very good. I would describe all the dishes I tried cheese souffle, ox cheek to be on the heavier side. It is very good British food, so probably an amazing place to go as a tourist. The atmosphere in particular is very cozy and rustic.
Really really wonderful food in a gorgeous pub that had lovely atmosphere. The lamb main was delicious and the potato dauphinoise was excellent. Tasty desserts too, the creme brule and the lemon tart were delicious. Super friendly service and a fab wine list. Highly recommend
We’ve had some great meals here over the years, and some not so great meals for one reason or another. Tonight we were relieved of £170 for two courses for three and a kids meal. If I was a total pleb I could have eaten the lamb main in one mouthful. A gastropub, to my mind, is still a pub with good cooking. A pub serves good portions of food. Alarm bells should be ringing when you send out food the same size as a starter and significantly smaller than a kids fish and chips. Sadly this is probably our last visit.
What a fantastic venue, with the most glorious surroundings. Let's be fair, it's not cheap, but it does weddings, so no surprise. The rooms are amazing, we stayed in Hebblewhite, the floor by the bed is very creeky and annoying. The whole setup is wonderful and very well produced. There is only one thing....JUDITH!!! Over patronising, too dramatic, doesn't listen, over complicates with extremely poor customer service skills. She may be better suited to a non front of house environment.
Such a lovely meal last October from The Punch Bowl Inn. This little gastropub is half way between Bowness and Kendal and it’s definitely worth travelling for as we had a brilliant night here. Everything was delicious and fresh and the staff were so welcoming and friendly especially to our pupper Watson who received two fresh sausages from the kitchen as a little treat! The star of the night had to be the Hake or the Mango and Passionfruit Soufflé or maybe the cheese soufflé yes I had two soufflés and I feel no shame I can’t wait to revisit after a long dog walk in The Lake District.
Overpriced, limited menu, greasy overbattered fish, and chips tasted like they had been cooked in lard. The black pudding starter was lovely, as were the puddings, I am told.
Four of us had been walking nearby with two dogs and called in on the off chance of having lunch. We asked if we could bring the dogs in while we dined. They showed us a table for four one of two in front of the bar. The dogs were able to curl up on the stone flagged floor while we dined. The menu was interesting, The Punchbowl being consistent winners of the Cumbrian Dining Pub of the Year. I thoroughly enjoyed my pork belly on very tasty smoked mash and my wife really loved her damson flavoured sausages. Prices for mains were mostly in the £16-20 bracket. There were also a nice selection of real ales. Would be good to visit in the evening to spend time savouring more of the menu.
A seriously good pub dining experience. Oh when I give 4 stars it has to be good! My pork belly was succulent and generous. The boar and damson sausages, very good and tasty. The celeriac starter, imaginative and a delightful combination with pickled fennel and melted smoked cheese. Star pud, the raspberry soufflé, lemon tart with damson ice cream good second. It isn't cheap, the the quality is one of the best in the area. Do go and try!
