Was surprised when one of the barmen came up to us and told us to stop looking at our phones. He explained that it was a 'No Device' pub and that talking and drinking beer was encouraged. Must admit there were signs all over stating such but we never noticed them. After laughing about it and putting away our phones we quite enjoyed this welcome change for a drinking establishment. The beer as well as the price was good. A recommended pub in Chester if you are looking for a quieter old style pub without people looking through their phones non stop .
Proper pub, really old, great drinks, cheap, staff are friendly. Greeted at the door and seated us with table service. Perfect place for a nice drink. No phones allowed out so you actually have to talk to people. I've lived in Chester for 10+ years and this has always been my favourite pub but I've not been in for a while. Definitely worth a visit if you're out in Chester.
Love it. Always visit when in Chester. Fantastic old place. Sam Smiths drinks . More expensive than pre covid but still good value. Remember Sam Smiths rules if you go in. Can't believe people still say they're not aware of them. Good beer. Nice staff. Great interior.
Whilst in Chester for a random night I was looking for a traditional real ale pub to have a quiet pint in, even though I am a predominantly a larger drinker, as I wanted the quite ambience of this type of pub. Whilst walking down the high street and googling pubs near me, I came across this place and wow, what a gem! It’s a Sam Smith’s pub and as such a little quirky, no mobile usage allowed whilst in although not vigorously enforced whilst I was in there, the occasional check is fine, but I suspect if sat there googling you would be told off and also signs to say swearing not allowed! The whole ambience was lovely, old-world pub, quiet and full of like-minded people. I have to say I am not a fan of Sam Smiths larger, but the ambience of this place made up for it. I would highly recommend a stop in this place, I really enjoyed an hour in there! The chap behind the bar was friendly but unintrusive as well.
Feels like going back in time when you step inside this ye olde inn located in Chester's historic Rows. Convivial atmosphere, great prices, and excellent selection of beers - full Samuel Smiths offering. Dart board in the back.
What a treat and a rarity to go tradional boozer and be reminded that antisocial behaviour is so passe. You are kindly reminded not to swear or use technology, for some of our party this was challenging to say the least, personallybi found it refreshing. Swear jar on the counter wouldn't go a miss! though, just in case, be nice for a local charity!!
It's a awesome pub. A proper blast from the past, no technology allowed in there it's fantastic and all the alcohol they serve is homemade
Visited during a trip in 2018. Very old school, Samuel Smith, cash only pub. Dimly lit and yellow walls make for some bad interior images. Had a decent pint of Old Brewery Bitter. I read they don't allow electronic devices but I don't recall seeing a sign that said that when we entered. I read a Google review today that called these type pubs "marmite", you either love or you hate it. I like that analogy. If in Chester again, I would take a pass on this pub.
What a fantastic old school pub love it. Don't see it any more with old regulars sitting having banter super friendly and the girl behind the bar was friendly to a nice socal pub every1 chatting with each other
Amazing building ran by awful people who think they have an entitlement to life beyond their reach. No phones or swearing? How about no anti social behaviour, like most bars operate. Telling people what to do isn’t creating a civil atmosphere, it is controlling and oppressive. If you are old, white and bigoted, this pub is for you.
