The Pied Bull

About

The Pied Bull is situated within the walls of the historic Roman City of Chester. Reputed to be the oldest licensed house in Chester. The pub dates from 1155 and today the interior reflects its distinctive heritage.

Story

Dating back to the 11th Century and once a coaching inn. The Pied Bull is the oldest continuously licensed premises in Chester. It has a colourful history and its fair share of ghosts. The cellar is haunted by the ghost of a cellar man from 1609 and two guest rooms are haunted by a chamber maid from 19th Century. In 1533 it was known as Bull Mansion, and a coach and four started to run from here to Birkenhead in 1784. Today it's an oak-beamed town centre pub with rooms. We offer great value food and clean, comfortable and competitively priced accommodation. A potted history of the pub taken from George Borrows' 'Wild Wales' is written on a blackboard in the restaurant.

We were voted Chester CAMRA pub of the year 2011 & have been nominated for 2012.

The Pied Bull's microbrewery reopened in April 2011. Historic records show that the Inn had its own brewery right up to the late 19th century.

This is the only working brewery within the walls of Chester, located less than 50 yards from the site of the famous Northgate Brewery.

Stopped at the pied bill for a drink and a spot of lunch, I had the steak pie and my husband had the bangers & mash, served with a selection of fresh vegetables. My pie came with chips but I asked if I could have mash instead. The pie was the best I can say I’ve ever tasted, the mash creamy and vegetables cooked to perfection. My husband really enjoyed his sausages. Would highly recommend, lovely proper home cooked tasty food. Will definitely be back if ever this way
What a fabulous place! Just had 3 nights in a twin room with my Mum. Excellent service from checking in, to checking out. Room had everything we needed, Ensuite was roomy and looked newly refurbished. We had an issue with the radiator in the room, but this was quickly sorted out by the manager, who supplied us with a portable radiator. Food in the bar is a little pricey compared to other pubs in the area, but it's good food. The location is spot on for the city centre. Can't wait for my next stay!
Excellent stay at this wonderful historic gem in the heart of Chester. It is so well located, everything is walkable. The staff are lovely and gave great service. Very comfortable stay, great sleep in our beautifully decorated room. The pub food is excellent, with the rooms quiet and relaxing. Highly recommend The Pied Bull! Rooms: Beautifully decorated, comfortable bed, quiet. Had a great sleep! Nearby activities: Chester Cathedral, city centre shopping, all the bars and pubs, the city walls… it’s all nearby! Walkability: Conveniently situated on Northgate, near the Cathedral, everything in the city centre is easily walkable in minutes. Food & drinks: Excellent traditional English breakfast, with vegetarian option. Great dinners and pub lunches too!
We had two nights stay here checking in on a Sunday and out on the following Tuesday. The pub is good food and service excellent. Our room was nice clean and well appointed. I’ve marked it 3 stars because the night time noise was constant. From people wandering noisily throughout the night and regular traffic followed by the early starts of refuse collection, street cleaning vehicle, bottle collections and the delivery and collection of beer kegs we didn’t get a decent sleep either night! I would visit the pub again but never stay in the hotel.l preferring to find somewhere I might enjoy a more restful sleep!
Absolutely fantastic, clean, spacious, hot water at a great pressure on top floor!! Beer options were also great. Didn’t eat, but it looked good. Staff were great, good value for hotel inside city walls.
We had a really pleasant stay. The room was fine and the bed comfy. The staff were friendly and helpful. My only issue is I would have liked more toast with breakfast. Not the end of the world tho also you can't fault the location.Rooms: 5/5
Called here Saturday evening. It was very busy so we where lucky to find seats. We only had drinks. My partner tried an Apples and Pears cider - the taste was nice but it was completely flat. He left a good half pint which isnt like him! It could be a lot comfier in this pub and better set out with more seating. Its sad to see really old pubs lose their personality and ambience.
Great food, incredible selection of beer that is well looked after and well priced too. Staff were all happy and knowledgable. This is in an ideal location. Whether you are staying or just passing this is a must! See you again soon.
Great location Rooms and hotel fantastic. Staff so helpful in all ways. Brewery tour available. Tremendous clean throughout Naomi stands out as so welcoming Food is stunning
I love this pub. Lovely atmosphere and beer garden. Independent brewery on site. So why just three stars? Cask beer is consistently served too warm. For the price they charge for their own beer it should be spot on cellar temperature and it never is. Please sort it out landlord. It ruins a perfect pub. I always try to support them with my custom, but I can never stay more than a pint or two due to warm beer. Hope this gets sorted soon.
