The Lensbury

Story

The Lensbury is a conference centre, hotel, and leisure facility located on the banks of the Thames in Teddington, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. The Lensbury was founded in 1920 as a club for Shell employees and was known as the Lensbury Club until the 1990s. It remains a subsidiary of Shell today.HistoryOriginsThe Lensbury Club was established in 1920 as a sports club for Shell staff in the United Kingdom - one of the driving forces behind its formation was Dutchman Henri Deterding, one of the original founders of the Royal Dutch/ Shell Group of Companies, who was a fitness fanatic. Land was acquired in Broom Road, Teddington, for playing fields and within a year there were active sections in Cricket, Rugby, Football, Ladies Hockey, Tennis and Chess. Between 1920 and the beginning of the Second World War significant additions to the Lensbury estate were made with property and land purchases on both sides of Broom Road.In 1933 the club merged with "Britannic House", a similar club operated by BP, and created a joint venture known as the "Lensbury and Britannic House Associated Clubs" – an arrangement that lasted for thirty years. In 1938 a new clubhouse was opened which comprised 162 bedrooms, a dining room, a ballroom and many other facilities. During the war years club activities were suspended and Lensbury became a Shell office and some of the sports grounds were ploughed up to grow vegetables.

Despite its far from central London, but accessibility is very easy and straight forward. Rooms a bit tired but the hotel definitely have absolute charm, character staff very bubbly, knowledgeable, helpful. Nice and clean leasure facilities. Great breakfast experience. Food was fresh and tasty. We had amazing weekend off the city busy life.nRecommended for couples, solo and especially family get aways.
Great place to stay the staff are super helpful and this is the first hotel where I tried coffee in a bag, which was surprisingly very nice. Location is amazing and the facilities are great, easy access into Richmond and other parts of London. I would definitely stat again.
We were really looking forward to our stay at The Lensbury Resort, given its lovely riverside setting and reputation for being a relaxing retreat. While the location and grounds are indeed beautiful, unfortunately, several aspects of our stay left us disappointed.nnThe biggest surprise was being woken in the middle of the night by a phone call from reception accusing us of making noise — even though we were all asleep at the time. There was no follow-up or apology, which left us feeling unfairly treated and unsettled, especially my child.nnThe room itself was average but not particularly comfortable. Wasn’t clean like a 4 star hotel room should be. The mattress was far too firm making it difficult to sleep, and we were frequently disturbed by noise from other guests throughout the night walking past. Someone decided to start making banging noises at 6am! It certainly didn’t feel like the restful escape we’d hoped for.nnBreakfast was average at best, with very limited vegetarian options. For a resort of this standard, we expected more variety and consideration for different dietary needs.nnOverall, the experience fell short due to poor sleep quality, lack of attentiveness, and an unfortunate lack of hospitality in addressing issues. We left feeling disappointed and unlikely to return.
2nd business trip here. Not overly impressed especially with their ability to add costs to a bill that doesn't exist. All of my team had issues with final billing. That and they add a service charge which you then find out is optional. Nice location but lacking good management.
The hotel has lovely grounds, nice location. Our rooms were shabby, run-down, in need of paint and new carpets and bath rooms.nThe hotel staff charged us for a 3rd room, claiming we'd booked it despite our protestations that we'd not. Waiting for a refund and possibly an apology.
