The Lensbury

Story

The Lensbury is a conference centre, hotel, and leisure facility located on the banks of the Thames in Teddington, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. The Lensbury was founded in 1920 as a club for Shell employees and was known as the Lensbury Club until the 1990s. It remains a subsidiary of Shell today.HistoryOriginsThe Lensbury Club was established in 1920 as a sports club for Shell staff in the United Kingdom - one of the driving forces behind its formation was Dutchman Henri Deterding, one of the original founders of the Royal Dutch/ Shell Group of Companies, who was a fitness fanatic. Land was acquired in Broom Road, Teddington, for playing fields and within a year there were active sections in Cricket, Rugby, Football, Ladies Hockey, Tennis and Chess. Between 1920 and the beginning of the Second World War significant additions to the Lensbury estate were made with property and land purchases on both sides of Broom Road.In 1933 the club merged with "Britannic House", a similar club operated by BP, and created a joint venture known as the "Lensbury and Britannic House Associated Clubs" – an arrangement that lasted for thirty years. In 1938 a new clubhouse was opened which comprised 162 bedrooms, a dining room, a ballroom and many other facilities. During the war years club activities were suspended and Lensbury became a Shell office and some of the sports grounds were ploughed up to grow vegetables.

My wife and I had such a wonderful stay at The Lensbury. What stood out most was the staff - every single person we interacted with was welcoming, respectful, and genuinely enthusiastic about making our stay special.nnWilliam hope I got the name right checked us in, and honestly, that first interaction set the tone for the entire visit. He was incredibly resourceful, thoughtful, and went above and beyond to help make the stay especially memorable for my wife and me. You could tell he truly cared about creating a great experience.nnThe restaurant staff were equally fantastic - Saaed, Gabriel, and another lovely member of staff whose name I unfortunately can’t remember Zu...a? - she was so good with our baby!!- all of them were warm, attentive, and brought such positive energy throughout our meals. Service felt personal without ever being overbearing. Loved the dessert!nnOne area of the grounds was undergoing repairs during our visit, but the team communicated this well in advance and managed expectations professionally, which we really appreciated.nnThe grounds themselves are excellent and have everything you could want for a relaxing stay - beautiful riverside surroundings, great leisure facilities, lovely walking areas, and an atmosphere that feels peaceful, vibrant, welcoming. The room we stayed in was a very good size. Beds comfortable.nnOverall, this is one of those places where the people genuinely make the experience unforgettable. We left feeling looked after, relaxed, and already talking about coming back.
I would hand on heart recommend this place and will happily be visiting again in the future. Firstly we’re very understanding when I had to change dates due to unforeseen circumstances. Then went above and beyond with a nice handwritten note and complimentary drinks for my partners birthday. Once we arrived and they saw my partner was pregnant they upgraded our room to make sure she was very comfortable and that really made our weekend. All the staff were friendly, the breakfast was amazing and the walks on the ground by the review were great. Like I said, will definitely be returning and would recommend it.
We went to enjoy the spa facilities as part of a big birthday celebration. Grounds were lovely. We had access to the sauna and pool. Ellie did my aromatherapy massage and facial, both were 10/10. Would absolutely recommend. Only thing slightly less than a 10 was the food which was just okay, but cocktails were lovely too.
Absolutely lovely . Stayed 26th Feb 26 for one night. Front of House reception could not have been nicer . It was my wife’s birthday and a lovely note and drink in the room from reception was a lovely touch. We will definitely return for the quality service alone thanks so much
This was my first stay at the Lensbury. I thoroughly enjoyed my spa treatment. Jodie, the therapist, made me feel so relaxed and comfortable. She went the extra mile. Highly recommend the relaxation massage. All the staff I have come across are extremely helpful and accommodating.
