Another away fixture for our football team near Stoke Mandeville. Thanks to Google maps we found a little gem of a pub -The Five Bells in Weston Turville, just 2 miles from the ground. A well appointed car park with plenty of spaces got us off to a good start. We got there slightly early for our table, but the pub was open. The interior furnishings were cosy, comfortable and a lovely open fire was just what we were looking for. The staff were very friendly and efficient, without being over attentive. Our food arrived in good time and well presented. I went for my favourite lunch, Gammon steak, eggs and chunky chips. My friends went for the fish and chips. Three empty plates were testimony to our enjoyment and their chunky chips would get a 5 star rating anywhere in the world! The food, drinks and coffee were all reasonably priced. They also have accommodation available. Would definitely return if in the area again. Our team won after a hard fought game to end off a very enjoyable day.
The service was very good, however, the roast dinner for every one of us on a table of six was extremely disappointing. The meat was actually good but the vegetables, especially the roast potatoes and parsnips were hard and rubbery. Some replacement potatoes were brought out that were slightly better but still not right.
Went for breakfast whilst having a couple of hours to spend. The breakfast was excellent with quality ingredients served piping hot. The only downside from 5 stars was that it was very cold where we were seated although we did move to a table near a log fire that was much better. I believe that they may have been trying to segregate this for residents. Definately one to return to.
Lovely gem of a pub/hotel in a nice village. Staff were friendly, room was very clean and presented well. Food was good quality and piping hot. Breakfast was spot on, set me up for the day. A good overnight stop on business travel.
Staff were very friendly and had no problems with a party of six. Plenty of space and somehow not completely rammed on a Sunday afternoon. Food was good and portions reasonable. Very pleasant.
Went there having been told that the food is good but service can be slow. I guess that was our experience but the friendly waitress explained that they were short staffed and she did a good job keeping a reasonably full restaurant served. We all liked the food, the atmosphere is really nice, we'll definitely be back.
We were here a few years ago and had a lovely experience. However, sadly not this time. The staff were friendly and welcoming on arrival. Sadly the veggie roast option was not available a shame these places can't offer a vegetable/Yorkshire pudding option for a reduced price when this happens.. When the meat roasts arrived, it was as if they had been sitting under a heat lamp for 20mins. Congealed, luke-warm gravy over hideously over cooked, mushy broccoli, a chewy Yorkshire and meat, and under cooked.. yet burned!.. parsnips. The potatoes were very nice that said. The side order of cauliflower cheese arrived late, and was cold inside. Unfortunately we couldn't get the staff's attention, so it as left uneaten. The two pub food options were much better. However, the side order of vegetables were, as above, pretty awful. When they plates were finally collected, we asked to have the cauliflower cheese taken off the price and also asked if we could order dessert. He said yes to both, then disappeared and was seen taking orders from other tables, never to return. We eventually gave up. I went to the bar and asked for the bill. The cauliflower cheese had not been removed as promised. Even once it had, we paid a ridiculous amount for what was, ultimately, a very disappointing experience. Sorry Five Bells :/ Bugle Horn for us in future.
The layout & ambience is pleasing BUT by 1.10pm, several items on the menu were unavailable including chicken for the chicken sandwich! More needed to be defrosted apparently. As for Kedgeree fish cakes..you need to search for the fish amongst the curried rice. My husband had Marguerite Pizza which had a slightly cooked ordinary tomato sliced on top...no finesse, sun dried or authentic Italian taste at all. Overall rather disappointing.
Ordered food for 6 people - 30 mins later and nothing ! Turned out that our order hadn't actually reached the kitchen - So disappointing as we had a taxi booked and was too late to order again. They said it was an IT issue, but everyone else around us was getting food !
Varied menu for adults and children, attentive staff especially Sarah in a cosy, village pub. Loved the log fire was burning on a dark, wet evening. Excellent for a family meal.
