Reviews

This used to be a lively pub full of a mixture of locals,  tourists and walkers, but it is not a shadow if its former self. Only open 2 days a week, almost empty when we visited, although every table but one in one bar had a reserved sign on it.  We wasn't made to feel particularly welcome even though we probably spent nearly £100 there.

Food isn't that cheap, but I can't comment on the quality as we didn't eat.

The location of this pub-with-lodging is its best asset, with direct access to trails up to the stunning Black Mountains. Our group stayed in one of the bunkhouses, great vfm. The food was fine, also good value. The Pub lacked atmosphere.

This is possibly my favourite place to visit in the whole world! better then the Taj Mahal, The Pyramids, The hanging gardens of Babylon even Sellafield nuclear power station!
The food is always consistent and never disappoints.
The hosts are ALWAYS friendly, humourously engaging with customers, obviously you may guess that my partner and I have visited this venue on many occasions, yes the pub may only be open for 2 or 3 days a week, but that is their choice and business model, there is no rule book that says "you MUST open every day".
To be honest we are amazed how Jill (the chef) cooks all those lovely meals, most of the time all by herself, Ahmid controls a very very busy bar and does a very good job of keeping the majority of people's glasses full.
If you're too petty or tight to pay for the car park (which is a charity donation) park 3 miles down the road in Talgarth.
If you need water and don't want to pay for it, we have a thing called a tap at home, it's very useful for filling up bottles, and if, if we ever run out we don't just expect someone to give it to us for free.
I would never walk into any premises with really muddy boots, it's just common decency, but then I am common which always helps.
Thank you Jill for all the lovely meals you have cooked us over the years, and thank you Ahmid, for the laughter, political discussions jokes, etc etc, and of course the lovely Butty Bach

Food was brilliant. Stayed in the bunk house which was perfectly comfortable, showers were hot.

Just got back from my brothers stag staying here for 2 nights as a group of 16. Had an amazing time, the landlord and staff we're so funny, friendly and helpful. Good selection of beers and drinks and the food was perfect pub food, Steaks and pies we're delicious. Nice cozy, pub with enough space for groups in the back and a pool table that got used a lot! The accommodation is simple but all we needed as we were up late and up early but comfortable and clean with nice hot showers and a good breakfast.

Lots of good walks right on the doorsteps with incredible views and the Black mountain Activity centre is only 10 minutes down the road if you're looking for group activities.

Massive thank you to all the staff. hope we didn't keep you up too late.

Would recommend this to anyone looking for a friendly place to stay for a walking holiday, stag or weekend away. 

Very good value and already planning my next visit.
