Story

To walk through the door of this real find of a pub is to step back in time to the days of Victorian splendour - thick carpets, pictures on walls and ceilings and a comfy, homely atmosphere.

There has been a pub on this site since 1547 and the original Landlord, one Derrick Carver was burnt as a martyr for his religious beliefs. One of its' most famous "guests" in the past has been "Jack the Ripper" - and in The Greene Room bar, (upstairs), you can spend some time following the story of his origins and how he planned his murders from this very spot. This is also the famous pub immortalised by Graham Greene in his classic novel "Brighton Rock".

This unique pub has a charm all of its' own and attracts locals, business people and visitors from all around the World who enjoy the atmosphere of a true Victorian public house along with good beer and quality food served til late. Its central location lends itself perfectly to work parties and gatherings. Call the pub on 01273 329472 for details on private hire options, buffets and party packages.

Annie’s real name is Annalise and she is an absolute star! Shes made us feel so welcome in her amazing nostalgic pub. Best pub in Brighton. The cricketers. Gins away!
I visited with a friend while on a weekend to Brighton. Loved the cosy feeling inside the pub and we were lucky to find a table by the fire, free, as it was a chilly night. We just had drinks but food was available. There is plenty of outdoor seating too. The location is great for a stop while sightseeing and shopping in the Lanes.
I visited on a very cold day and the pub was warm and deliciously cosy. It is a popular venue and has a vibrant atmosphere. There's is no dedicated parking for customers, that's impossible given it's age and location. There is some road parking paid but hard to secure and disabled parking at the Town Hall. The nearby underground car park is eye-wateringly expensive. If you're in the area, it would be a shame to miss this local landmark. Good food, as well
Proper pub interior with a lively late night atmosphere. Pints and drinks sadly come in plastic - but that is expected. A great place if you are going for a group chat with the potential for a boogie.
Beautifully pub staff friendly and ready to tell you history of the pub. Definitely worth going.
Absolutely fab place for a pint of Harvey’s! Love the traditional feel of a proper pub/bar and friendly staff. Menu sounds good but haven’t eaten here.
Lovely pub, good beer. I chose the a safe bet of Cod loin and chips. Fish quality good and chips were standard. The portion on the other hand was very disappointing. The cod loin was more like half a cod loin portion, 50 years of eating fish and chips it was the smallest cod I have ever seen. The cod was accompanied with 13 medium size chips and a teaspoon of mushy peas. Looks like a McDonald's on the way home. Wont be eating at The Cricketers again.
Stopped off for a bite to eat and drink, it was very nice and such a lovely old pub
I like this pub. A proper old school style pub. Reminds me of the old London pubs. Bar staff are friendly and. are aware of who to serve next at bar. I enjoyed my time here. I will visit again.
Atmospheric pub in a central Brighton location. Absolutely loved the vegan options - we had the roasted vegetable with vegan Gouda cheese baguette & the vegan chickn burger with chips. Would thoroughly recommend
