Went for a quick lunch time visit under an hour as a short walk from work. The walk and the art really helped lift my mood.nParticularly enjoyed the Turners little illustrations.
What a fabulous art museum!! It has such beautiful paintings and a collection of different periods and it is free! How can you not visit this museum and feel joy! There is a restaurant and a cloak room. Donations are welcome.
Tate Britain is such a brilliant spot for art! The way they showcase British art through history is amazing. seeing works by Turner and then moving on to more modern pieces was such a treat. The galleries are super chill, spacious, and perfect for getting lost in the art. The special exhibitions were a highlight, so thoughtfully put together, and they really made me think. The staff were lovely, and the café was a great little break after wandering around. Honestly, whether you’re a tourist or live in London, you’ve got to check it out!
One of the best galleries in London and slightly lesser known, but easy to get to and not crowded.nnTop-rate curating too for 21st century Britain and good clear commentary by the paintings, including mentioning the labour to produce what you see in the paintings - sugar for the tea in the drawing room for example - was grown by enslaved or forced workers.nnWell worth a visit and enjoy the paintings.
Founded in 1897 through the donation of Henry Tate, it was originally known as the National Gallery of British Art. In 1932, it became widely recognized as the Tate Gallery, and in 2000, following the opening of Tate Modern, it was renamed Tate Britain. The museum houses an extensive collection spanning British art from the 16th century to the present day. It is particularly renowned for its works by J.M.W. Turner, holding the world’s largest collection of his masterpieces. Visitors can also admire works by prominent British artists such as Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable, David Hockney, and Bridget Riley. The original building was designed in the Neoclassical style, with later expansions incorporating modern architectural elements. The central hall, with its magnificent domed ceiling, is a highlight of the museum. Entry to the permanent collection is free, but tickets are required for major temporary exhibitions.
