Kensington Palace

About

The elegant home to generations of stylish royal women: where Queen Victoria was born and raised; Queens Mary, Anne and Caroline held court; and the royal style-icons Princess Margaret and Diana, Princess of Wales lived in the 20th century.

Story

The feminine influence of generations of royal women has shaped this stylish palace and elegant gardens. The birthplace and childhood home of Queen Victoria, the palace first became a royal residence for William and Mary in 1689. Mary felt ‘shut in’ at Whitehall and much preferred her new Kensington home, which was enlarged by Sir Christopher Wren. The famous Orangery, was built in 1704 by Queen Anne, and George II’s wife, Queen Caroline, another keen gardener,
added further improvements. Today, the palace houses a stunning permanent display of fashionable and formal dresses, the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection, which includes Queen Victoria’s wedding dress and dresses worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

Interesting place to visit. It was our first historical place, and we had nothing to complete with. I was expecting something more exciting but still was nice. You can see only a small part of the home with some pieces of history. Without a guide, it's a bit confusing. Audio guide didn't help at all. Was actually useless. There is a nice gift shop, where we found beautiful souvenirs. Cafe was very crowded. Park with lake and birds are good to walk and rest around. There is a small Princess Diane memorial. It's nice to see as well. Overall worth to visit once!
Kensington Palace is a beautiful and historic site, offering a fascinating glimpse into royal history. The gardens are stunning and well-maintained, providing a peaceful escape in the heart of London. The exhibits are well-curated, and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. To fully enjoy everything, plan to spend at least 3-4 hours here. Free audio guide is also highly recommended. Overall it is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and tourists alike!
My family and I enjoyed visiting Kensington! There was a lot to see. I read at the reviews who did not like the audio tour. We thought it was great. We took our time and listened to each section and paid attention to what the tour was talking about. it was informative and gave us good insight into the royal life back in the day. Coming from the USA, we don’t have much to compare to. The Palace is for the most part still in a Victorian setting. It’s very elegant and has been brought back to as close to original repair as can be expected after all this time. The gardens are beautiful. The princess Diana memorial at the sunken Garden is also very beautiful to see. Getting the 10 to 10:30 AM ticket. Get there about 15 to 20 minutes early and you will have no crowds. By the time the next two tours start getting in the place pack up pretty quickly. It is an audio guided tour, you can take your time and, walk around each room as long as you like. You don’t have to go to the next one and the next part of the tour on until you’re ready. If you were into history at all, especially royal history, you gotta visit this place at least once.
Visited about 2 hours before closing and that was enough time to see the rooms open to the public. It was fun to talk with the staff about the home’s history and the various monarchs who built and lived here. The palace is not as busy as Buckingham, but still is a good representation of the classic palace. The cafe was nice after the tour and the grounds were nice as well. The entrance is through the Kensington Gardens on the West side of Hyde Park. We ended up having to walk all the way around because we went to the wrong side of the home. But walking down the road to the West of the Palace was interesting because it was all Foreign Consulates and Embassies.
Loved it and enjoyed the Princess Diana memorial garden. Touring the palace public rooms and formal gardens wasn't available the day I visited the palace, still I was happy to walk around outside and take pictures. If you can plan enough time in advance to tour, I suggest that you strongly make plans for the tour. If you can stroll through Kensington park, adjacent to the palace, it's a beautiful public park and I loved walking through the park to visit the outside of the palace and pond, at the end of the park.
Kensington is a royal home since 1689. The public part of the palace houses the King’s & Queen’s State Apartment. The private side is where the Prince & Princess and their young family live today. The free audio guide is really helpful for visitors to understand the history & the kings @ queens who lived here. Entrance fee is £24 per adult and it takes around 1.5 hours to complete tour. It was an insightful visit for me,
This place is much smaller than the Buckingham palace however, it is no less in beauty. The palace is surrounded by a garden and has a huge lake in front of it. If you want to enter the palace and take a tour then you will have to purchase tickets. However, if you just want to visit the garden and have a nice day there, it's completely free. You can enjoy the view of the lake, have a stroll in the garden, walk your dog, feed the swans, ducks and other birds, or even have a nice picnic here.
This was even better than I expected. The staff talks helped to bring this place to light. Highly recommend if you appreciate Queen Victoria & desire to learn about her early life. Mid-way we visited the Cafe & food was very good. Lovely gift shop too. **one of my favorite little areas...Princess Diana wallpaper which I think was on first floor coming off lift
Nestled amidst breathtaking gardens and a tranquil pond, this palace is an absolute gem for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The architecture is simply stunning, providing the perfect backdrop for capturing memorable moments. The meticulously maintained gardens offer a delightful escape for leisurely strolls, with picturesque views at every turn. And with numerous benches scattered throughout, there’s no shortage of cozy spots to pause and take in the beauty of the surroundings. My visit was nothing short of magical, and I highly recommend this enchanting palace for anyone seeking a serene and unforgettable experience.
