Clear to see from all directions this spike towers above the other buildings and gives the impression of a majestic country church.
The Spire House is the national landmark of the City of Westminster. Located in Lancaster Gate. It was the Christ Church Lancaster Gate. This Christ Church was built in 1854-55, with the tower and spire added in 1863. It formed part of a larger composition of buildings on Lancaster Gate. The tower and spire of the church, which are now Grade II listed The church survived in World War II. But it was closed and demolished in 1977 due to fungal decay and only its spire and tower survive. In 1983 it became housing, incorporated into Spire House designed by Covell Matthews Partnership. The original central garden enclosure was reserved for the private use of residents of a number of the surrounding houses. By 1928 the garden was owned by Major W E Chapman and Judge E H Chapman, who were responsible for its maintenance. It was laid out as a lawn with shrubberies in the centre and around the perimeter. It remains a private garden today, largely grassed, with perimeter path and fine trees and shrubs to the boundaries.
Beautiful church
Beautiful, but best at sunrise
Beautiful spire, pity the church is no longer there
That's how it was in 2009.
