I had to spend most of today at Southend A&E services, due to very high blood pressure, and I was impressed with the care I received and the pleasant, calm staff I met. The young doctor and nurse who dealt with me in SDES were particularly excellent - professional, pleasant and caring and they deserve a special mention.nSo pleased to see the high standard of NHS staff at Southend Hospital as I have to admit I was dreading it due to the bad press they get. In my experience they do a very difficult job cheerfully and efficiently.
My mum was admitted recently for sadly end of lifenShe went onto Eastwood for a few days which although is not usually EOL was a most professional and caring environment for anyone to hope to be. Each and every staff member we met gave excellent communication and pastoral support to us and brilliant care to mum.Nothing was too much trouble for them.nThey allowed me to stay beside mum which helped my experience of a difficult situation.nI felt extremely proud and encouraged to see an NHS ward working at its best with all the staff working as a very coordinated and effective teamnThank you so much for everything you did for us
Today I was seen in the breast clinic, as a mammogram found somthing. Such lovely professional staff. From the lovely reception to the two lovely ladies that explained whats was going to happen. The two lovely ladies that took another mammogram. And the two friendly professional ladies that done a small procedure and a biopsy on a hard mass lump. And back for another Mammogram with the kind ladies. Really couldn't faught any of them. Didn't wait long either in each stage. And then a lovely little chat with the first two kind ladies. Everyone made me feel so comfortable and reassured me talked me through every step. Thank you to you all.
Attended an appointment in audiology department three weeks after being referred by my GP. I was seen on time by a doctor named Joseph who conducted a thorough examination of my hearing problems at the end of which he explained that hearing aids would be of assistance and would help me to hear. I said that I was happy to have these aids at which point he said that if I had the time he could arrange for them to be fitted there an then! I then saw another audiologist, Nafe, who spent time and patience fitting and tailoring hearing aids for me. So, three weeks after being referred I walked out of hospital equipped with hearing aids having received a first class service from these two members of staff. A BIG SHOUT OUT for both of them!! Well done NHS.
Shopland Ward was a complete nightmare. My dad was there with a broken hip. Patients were left in bed day in, day out with no physio — the physio staff would not get any patients walking, including my dad. I later found out the physio staff are untrained care assistants and not registered physiotherapists. We were lied to by multiple staff. I witnessed emergency patient buzzers go unanswered. My dad had a blocked catheter for ten hours with 1,300 ml in his bladder; it was only when it became an emergency that the staff unblocked the catheter.nnMost of the time, my dad was not dressed in a gown or pyjamas and was not washed for more than 12 hours. They lost my elderly dad’s varifocal glasses and we had to pay for an emergency pair; the ward manager said she would reimburse us, but that never happened. Staff will lie to patients and their families on this ward, and when they get caught out they don’t care. A healthcare assistant told me she hoped my dad would hurt himself so they could get more staff, and she was not disciplined for it.nnI watched patients who needed help being fed go without meals. At night, there was one qualified member of staff and two health care assistants. After my dad’s hip operation, he lay in bed for twelve days and came home disabled. We had to get private physio to get him walking again because Southend Hospital would not provide it. Also, after 120 days, the hospital was supposed to check my dad as per the hip-replacement database, but there was no phone call.nnIn A&E, my dad was told he would have his hip operation the next morning, but he did not — he lay in bed for three and a half days with no pain relief until he had the operation. While he was there, his mental and physical well‑being deteriorated. I contacted Martha Rule and said my dad was deteriorating mentally and physically; they told me that unless my dad was in a coma or deceased, they were not interested. It was a nightmare getting my dad home safely, but he is on the mend now and doing better.nnIn the 12 days my dad was on the ward, the staff were rude, aggressive, and dismissive to patients and their families, and medical emergencies were not important. When my dad tried to get out of bed and fell over, we didn't find out until hours after the event.nnThis was not just me — other families were having the same problems. We contacted PALS to make a complaint, but our complaint was refused, as we were told we couldn't make a complaint on our dad's behalf; he would have to make the complaint.nnSouthend Hospital is always in the papers for all the wrong reasons. I have only ever had bad experiences with Southend Hospital, never good.
