Right in the heart of Thurso, perfect for young people and friends trying to explore the northern coast.nnWe were a big group of surfers and was warmly welcomed by James who was a legend.nnBreakfast supplies are free which was a huge help as we were on a low budget surf trip and could freely help ourselves made our experience a lot easiernnRooms are simple but perfect for what we needed clean, warm and comfortable couldn’t recommend morennCheers Sandra’s we will be back
Well, rooms are small, bathrooms are in the room and there was no toilet paper or soap run out. The kitchen is well equipped though. The street felt uncomfortable even for a person from the city but it's not a hostel related. I could smell of marijuana, luckily not in the bedrooms, but hey, I'm glad there was a space available as I was late for the ferry. He says he always keeps a place or two in cases like this. That was helpful as I didn't have to pack my ten up at 6am the next morning.
We booked the double private room with bathroom and to be honest I have nothing positive to say about the room. No towels or hand soap in the bathroom, half a roll of old toilet paper, both beds were dirty with the sheets full of hair and extremely poor quality mattresses and beds. We did ask for new bed sheets and towels, both of which arrived quickly with an apology but it should never have happened to begin with. A very bright light outside the window and old broken blinds meant the room was very bright, even at night. I have had a better night sleep in a tent!nThe shower doors were broken and did not close together properly meaning when one took a shower it ended up flooding the bathroom floor.nI could feel each spring in the mattress and the bed was a frame with the base under the mattress made from chipboard making it very loud with each movement, unsupportive and uncomfortable.nI would not advise anyone to stay here and for £50 it is severely overpriced.
AVOID! AGGRESSIVE HOST + BED BUGS. The host behaved in a shockingly aggressive and threatening manner. He shouted at us and kicked us out of the hostel with no reasonable justification. He was so intimidating it seemed like he could be physically dangerous.nnStaying in the double bed w/ private bathroom, we woke up after the first night freezing cold as the heating was switched off overnight & morning. When I called the host, James, to see if the heating could be left on even at a low level he said no as he personally found it uncomfortable to sleep with it on weird and that it was expensive fair enough. He pretty much hung up on me so I called him back to ask if instead we could have an extra blanket. He said 'I'll see what I can do' then hung up again. Since communication was so short and snappy, my girlfriend phoned him back there is no one staffing the disgusting mess of a reception so most communication has to be via phone to clarify if we'd get an extra duvet/blanket. James proceeded to shout, full-volume, very aggressively at her. We were both shaken and upset by the exchange. When we returned to our room, James knocked on our door, returned £50 cash for our last night and told us he was kicking us out, that if he found us there the next morning he would physically throw us out, repeatedly calling us 'beasts'. We were calm and polite with him in all communication, even when he lost his temper. He was highly agitated and very intimidating. Our bedroom was by the kitchen with squeaking floorboards. All night and all morning when we heard people passing our room, we were afraid it was James. We kept the door locked out of fear.nnThe next morning, my girlfriend woke up covered in bites. When I inspected the bed, I found bed bugs in the seam of the mattress. I would have reported this to James, but I felt genuinely threatened by his behaviour and was afraid to tell him. Judging by another review here, this anger and aggression is not an isolated incident. This does not feel like a safe place to stay.
The owner has anger problems. Didn't do anything towards me but when arrived saw road rage calling other driver a see you next Tuesday which he then started telling me about while checking me in, which I found really unprofessional and uncomfortable and he also started 'counting to 10' to calm down. Later when someone else no idea who accidentally latched the door leading to my room and I had to call him as I was locked out, he was swearing as he came up the stairs 'what the f has happened this time' etc. Felt very uncomfortable asking him for anything as I felt like walking on eggshells, so I didn't end up showering as I didn't want to ask for a towel. Two stars as the fridge was well stocked for breakfast and decorated quite homely in the kitchen. Beds very hard, can feel springs. Slept well, but taxi rank out front, so, noisy if I hadn't closed the windows
